Drug addict doctor tried to get wife hooked on heroin

That's so incredibly selfish of him. "Hey I'm addicted to drugs and I want you to know what I go through so I'm taking it upon myself to inject you with a highly addictive substance". I don't understand what runs through these people's minds...it's a sick world.

I wouldn't try to get someone I love hooked on drugs.

At first, it may seem to him like a way to control her. His chances of keeping her if she's not on dope may be pretty bleak.

You spend a lot of time with somebody and they become likely to pick up your bad habits. One girl I would see on an intermittent basis started asking me for dope one extended weekend, then I had to go away for a few days and when I got back she mobbed me, screaming about how sick she'd gotten and how she needed more. I felt like a vampire making vampires.

To me this sounds like a really bad case of reporting. I'd personally suspect that what actually happened is she herself administered the shot, and was either the one to suggest that she use the last of his heroin - or did it in a fit of anger/frustration and to get rid of what was left of his heroin when she discovered he was still using and unwilling to quit - a sort of "fine if you're going to kill yourself with the drug maybe I should too". That'd also explain why she was injected with an overdose despite the fact that he's a doctor and likely knows what he's doing.

Speculation of course but it doesn't sound like this story was very truthful when it comes to the details.

That said, even if my theory is correct, he should have stopped her, knowing the risks. If it was his idea then he was incredibly stupid to start an opioid naive user with IV, and should have given her a small snorted dose - or better yet nothing at all.

I think you guys are vastly overestimating the competence of the average doctor. I'd feel safer with most of the experienced BLers shooting me up with heroin before letting some random doctor do it.

To be honest, I can kind of sympathize with him, not so much on the dose thing, but how many times have you had the discussion with a non-drug user (usually a partner or family member) who says 'well why can't you just stop doing it?' Because of course someone who's never tried a drug like heroin would never understand the seductive allure it holds. I don't think he was intentionally trying to 'get his wife addicted,' that seems like a bit of creative journalism to me. Nobody intends to get themselves addicted, let alone anyone else. I'd say he was probably fairly new to heroin use and in denial about his relationship with the drug. When his wife called him on it, he said 'no, you just don't understand why it's so wonderful and it makes me happy and I feel like a better person on it and I'm not really addicted anyway I just do it to relax after work etc etc,' talks the wife into trying it in an attempt to help her understand why he's so attached to the drug, then through plain old carelessness (or maybe an unusual batch) he accidentally doses her too highly and she OD's.

It's tragic, and a doctor really 'should' know better, but the sad truth is that they quite often don't. A lot of doctors are really very naive when it comes to recreational/street drugs.
