A drug abuse counselor was arrested last week after investigators said they caught him selling heroin in Scott Township and Carnegie.

Vincent Scott, 44, of Ross Township, was charged on April 1 with numerous drug crimes after Scott Township police and the district attorney’s drug task force said they witnessed him selling heroin multiple times last week.

Before his arrest, Scott had worked as a counselor with the Peer Support and Advocacy Network in Pittsburgh, which helps addicts and people with mental health issues. Scott Township police Sgt. Jeff Skees said he was driving a Peer Support-owned vehicle while selling the heroin and admitted to being “embarrassed” by the arrest.

“It’s absolutely unbelievable,” Skees said. “He’s a phony. He’s a fake.”

The arrested prompted Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. to instruct the county controller to conduct a performance audit on the peer support group. Officials at the Peer Support and Advocacy Network could not be reached for comment.

Skees said workers there could not believe Scott had been arrested for allegedly selling bricks of heroin.

“Apparently he’s not using now, just preying on addicts,” Skees said. “To be honest, I think he’s the lowest of the low.”

Haha that's some hilarious shit. I especially like the part "Apparently he's not using now, just preying on addicts" This shit is in one of the nicer parts of Pittsburgh, too. Even better that he was drivin around the company van hustlin out of it.

"How many you want? I'll be there in 5, look for the Peer Support van"

haha, I have a friend whos a drug councellor and can almost imagine him doing that shit Xo
well not heroin but other substances fo sho.

He is not "preying on addicts." Is he a total hypocrite and a douchebag? Yes. But addicts make their own decision to use, and are willing to do so despite any consequence that arises because of it. I had an addiction at one point, and I sure as hell don't blame anyone for it. Did some people do horrible things to make my life more stressful, and make it easier to use? Yes. Ultimately however the choice boils down to what you want out of your life, and the decisions you want to make. I don't care if he was a drug counselor, a street hustler, or a preacher, you can always say no. As I said, he is a hypocrite, but he isn't "preying on drug addicts," they make it sound like he can force them to use if they don't want to. He isn't putting a gun to their head.

i have seen this sort of thing more than once. for instance, the ex wife's best girl was a drug addiction counselor who sold her and others grams of cocaine.
the whole recovery industry is a racket so this is old hat.

He is preying on addicts. The addicts are people who are desperately seeking help for their problem and most likely wouldn't be in recovery unless their inner intention was to stop. How does it help that the guy that is supposed to help them get clean is offering them drugs for money?

Do you know what addictive behaviour is sir? Or are you just another crackpot who doesn't believe in addiction problems? Your comment was incredibly cold and callous.

Addicts DO make their own decisions to start using. Many times it is triggered due to problems in their life, like losing a loved one, etc. When they seek treatment, they are usually trying to get clean, but need help. It doesn't help when scum is just milking their habits in "recovery" torward relapse.

It's quite obvious this man fits the description of a predator. He is obviously seeking his job as a counselor to prey on addicts. If you think he is not, you need to go get your head checked.

You don't understand dude. People who are addicted cannot stop themselves. The drug has taken control over them. When the drugs are being offered, they cannot be declined when somebody is addicted.

that's nonsense^^ ''people that are addicted can not stop themselves''. it is, in the end, always the addict that ceases their addiction. the addict choses to begin and choses to end .

no matter if they turn to the addiction recovery rackets or cold turkey .

this shit head dealer/counselor is no more predator than any other mutt that slangs junk. ''you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink...''. most of these counselors have substance abuse in their background.

what a shitty job-listening to other mutts whining about their out of control lives!

The addict seeks help for their addiction when they feel they cannot control themselves. Most addicts cannot control themselves when dope is offered right in front of them. You tell somebody who smokes cigarettes they can't have one, see what happens ;)

Although it does require self-control ultimately, many people don't have self control or there wouldn't be so many morbidly obese people in the world.

Self control is the key. But that's beyond low to go offer heroin to people who are seeking help because they feel they have no self control in the first place.

when you seek a job to make extra (illegal) money on other people's problems(they are looking to you for help for), you are a predator.

In ecology, predation describes a biological interaction where a predator (an organism that is hunting) feeds on its prey (the organism that is attacked).
Yes, a predator (the counselor) is feeding on it's prey (addicts with money to buy drugs), by selling them drugs, and buying himself whatever he wants with the money. Classic predator.

Itemized decimation of your post:

1: The addict does not always choose to end their addiction, some people such as myself are sent to prison and forced to get clean.

2: The counselor -IS- more of a scumbag than the average dealer because he is choosing people who have made the decision to try and get clean and seeking his help and instead getting offered drugs.

3: The counselor chose to become a counselor, he knew what it entitled.

Thanks for posting!

This is false. A large portion of people in rehabs and recovery programs are there because they are forced into it. This be by families, the court systems, probation, whatever. If you're determined to stop, you will. I speak from experience on this one. You may have setbacks and bumps in the road, but you do whatever it takes to get clean.

It doesn't help, I never said it helped, you're taking me out of context. The bottom life is you will always have influences around you trying to drag you down, you have to make your own decisions. This goes for the entirety of life, so you better develop the will power at some point as an addict. He is not putting a gun to their head forcing them to do drugs. They know doing drugs is fucking up their life, it's not like some corrupt drug counselor suddenly makes them think it's ok. Is he a scumbag? Yes. But drug addicts cannot be "preyed" upon when they are choosing to do the drugs themselves.

Do you know what addictive behaviour is sir? Or are you just another crackpot who doesn't believe in addiction problems? Your comment was incredibly cold and callous.

I do in fact know what addictive behavior is, and I also know resorting to insults, such as calling me a "crack pot" do not make a debater look too intelligent. Addictive behavior can be conquered with the right decisions. I had a pain killer habit spanning a few months, and knew it was out of control, and that I would use when I was around it. I had to make the tough decision to relocate, and change friends etc. but it can be done. You think my post was cold and callous, but it really isn't. The problem with addicts is that they are babied around all the time, and therefore wind up not having any real motivation to quit. It takes sometime to stand strong, who refuses to let the addict ruin their life anymore, and won't accept excuses. That is the only realistic way to help someone trying to recover, if you bend your regulations, addicts will run right over you. When you are in addiction you became great at excuse making and addiction, it takes a strong person who won't accept that to change the behavior around. Again I speak from personal experience. That doesn't mean you cannot be compassionate, but you must draw the line and stand firm at some point.

Correct, and that decision making is destructive, and must be stopped. What is with you and using the word "help?" I don't think anyone on here is crazy enough to say this counselor was helping their situation, but it is a fact that it was ultimately their choice to use or not. You act like they won't have good friends and such offering them down the road, where they won't have to have the will power to refuse, that's preposterous. Remember, their good friends at the time are most likely addicts, as they probably have surrounded themselves with them. I guarantee you a good friend is just as strong of an influence. Of course you have to get rid of those people as well ;)

Welcome to the real world, you act like he is some exception. This world is full of people trying to capitalize on other people. Unlike in many cases though, there really isn't too much deception here. The addicts know it's wrong, and still choose to do it anyway. Really I'm sure it's just a great excuse for them for why they relapsed, because he has the credentials that he does. Remember, as an addict nobody wants to take accountability. It is much easier to blame the other guy for your problems.

You don't understand dude. People who are addicted cannot stop themselves. The drug has taken control over them. When the drugs are being offered, they cannot be declined when somebody is addicted.
This is the exact mindset that prevents recovery. This is an attitude of self helplessness, that will only propel the addict mindset into further addiction. Your statement is a prime example of what addicts tell themselves, and why they stay in the hole. Saying it is IMPOSSIBLE to refuse your drug of choice is total bullshit, because MANY people have done it. Do you really think people who have successfully recovered didn't get offered many times, and have to make the tough decision to say no? If your logic was correct, recovery would be impossible, because the futile mind would stand no choice against addiction. There is no doubt that addiction is horrible and debilitating, but saying one cannot refuse and want better for themselves is total bullshit. If you look around and see the damage you're doing to everyone around you, that's a good start for motivation right there. For as long as one believes he is helpless to his addiction, he will forever stay addicted.

I agree that there are a large number of people in rehab that were forced into it, and I do agree that when you are ready you will do whatever it takes to get clean. What I do not agree with is the idea that there are not honest people who have got caught up in drug addiction either through ignorance or just stupidity that make the choice to go to rehab. If you are a user who enters rehab of your own free will knowing that you need to get clean and puts your faith in the staff there and one of them waits til you are going through withdrawl and offers up your drug of choice then I have to disagree with you Cyrax and say that they ARE in fact preying upon your weakened state.

This is just silly. I'm studying addictions counseling and know a lot of people in the field. 2 weeks ago I went to the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association spring conference so I saw a large cross-section of the 'industry' throughout my state.

The vast majority of people working in the field are making next to nothing and do it because they care and want to help people. Of course there are going to be assholes in the mix but to call the whole field a 'racket' is pure fiction.

Places like Cirque Lodge in Utah that cater to the wealthy and charge $1,000/day are the exception, not the rule. Most agencies struggle to scrape by on shoestring budgets and charge as little as they have to utilizing sliding scales and doing whatever they can to get people the treatment that they need.

I live in the poorest county in my state which also has one of the highest HIV rates of the entire country. When I decided to kick benzos I went to the county Health Department and they offered me a free bed in detox that same night. I didn't end up kicking there because they don't do tapers only detox, but I also ended up getting 8 hours of cognitive behavioral therapy a month for less then $20/month.

Some people do make an obscene amount of money for running rehabs but like C2L said they are the exception rather than the rule.

probably a sociopath

My counselor at the methadone clinic is one of the nicest, most honest people I have ever known. She is the opposite of the person talked about in the article. Her heart is completely in what she does. The whole methadone clinic has staff is similar to her. A lot of people go into the field to help others because they have been affected by the tragedy addiction can bring.

I can't believe some of the shit people are saying here. It's like seriously, where have empathy and faith gone? Life based on cynicism is sad and cold. Love, empathy and faith is where its at, regardless of how difficult it might be sometimes.
