A drone carrying more than six pounds (2.7kg) of methamphetamine has crashed near Mexico's border with the US.

Mexican police in Tijuana say they were alerted to an unidentified object in a car park of a shopping centre.

"The drone had packages taped to it and was covered with plastic bags containing the drug known as crystal", the local police chief said.

Authorities are investigating where the flight originated, who controlled it and where it was bound for.

No big surprise here.. everybody knew this day was coming. This will eventually become the way drugs are shipped.

Soon ICE and US border patrol will have access to SAM sites and flak cannons along the border to shoot down any unauthorized aircraft. Probably already in the works. Or maybe drone to drone combat in the air. Drone fights. Haha. Crazy future world we live in.

Knowing them they would probably end up eradicating a bunch of endangered birds or a monarch migration :\

FEDS UNCONCERNED OVER DRONE FOUND SMUGGLING DRUGS FROM MEXICO
by WARNER TODD HUSTON23 Jan 2015

Early this week, Mexican authorities took possession of an unmanned aerial vehicle that crash-landed on the Mexican side of the U.S. border near San Ysidro, California. The drone was reportedly carrying crystal meth and was used to smuggle the drugs into the U.S.

On Thursday, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported that the drone was carrying just over six pounds of the illegal drug and that the street value of the cargo was about $48,000.

Authorities said that the six-propeller Spreading Wings S900 drone was unable to support the weight of the cargo and crashed before making it over the border into the U.S.

American authorities, however, have insisted that they are not worried that drug smugglers will suddenly start using drones in great numbers to smuggle drugs across the border. “We’re not greatly concerned that this will become a huge issue,” Washington-based special DEA agent Matt Barden told Fox News Latino. “The big reason is it is almost fruitless.”

DEA spokesperson Amy Roderick also moved to allay fears that drones would bring a new wave of drugs across the border. Roderick released a statement stating, “We would not call using drones a new trend in smuggling. … This method will only allow a small amount of drugs to be flown at a time and coupled with the ease of detection, does not make this method very profitable to these drug trafficking organizations.”

However, another official told Fox that if smugglers used drones in the Tucson desert or at Big Bend National Park in Texas, “you can make shipments all day without anyone noticing.”

Still, federal authorities noted that they are more worried that smugglers might use drones for a more conventional purpose: surveillance. Authorities say that they fear the drug cartels could use drones to spy on U.S. border agents and to pinpoint their positions in order to help smugglers avoid detection. They also fear that cartels might use surveillance drones to launch attacks on border agents.

I remember when the feds were unconcerned about prescription drugs.. we all see there lack of concern was well founded.

The feds are always so happy to post their hundred thousand million dollar drug seizures. The truth is that these are worth jack shit and can only be sold for so much due to the black market they create. The thing with drones is the chance of a person getting caught seems to be greatly reduced. So you just send a whole bunch of cheap drones carrying a whole bunch of cheap drugs worth a small fortune.. and low and behold you have a sound business strategy.

Sometimes I wonder who the hell the feds recruit?

I would tell them my prediction of where this goes next, but as they are so smart i'm sure they already have it all figured out. 8)

How much weight can a drone hold? Could a person illegally cross the border by hiding inside one? I don't know if there's enough room or what their weight limit is.

Can they be picked up by radar or do they fly to low?

According to the article the drone crashed because it was unable to support a mere 6 lbs, you wouldn't even be able to smuggle newborns lol. Were not talking US military grade drones, the one in that picture looks like it was made in somebody's garage.

everything starts out small, tip of the iceberg here..

Still waiting for the foresighted individual to see the end results of this. Where is this going to end up?

Its going to be like south park when everyone gets a drone then the cops all get drones to police all the drone owners lol was a funny episode. And of course it would be math, anyone remember the tweakers who built a model rocket in the trunk filled with ice to blast off in case they got stopped? It was in a microgram before the pigfuckers at the dea made it Leo only.

One day they will build more powerful drones that will be able to carry a few kilos, load it with heroin and you could be flying millions of dollars worth once its been cut and processed for street sale.

Yeah all I can say is WOW...that drone looks like it's been gerry rigged with weed-wacker parts hahah. I mean seriously, they'd be much better off just using weather balloons with GPS/RF emitters.

But if they did that I could see it resulting in some crazy scenarios akin to that in "no country for old men".

Once you launch a weather balloon you can't control where it goes. It's sort of just up to the wind.

True, but familiarity with meteorological data can go a long way...and there are lots of online & software programs which can quite accurately determine where the balloon might end up....i mean the margin of error isn't very large, maybe a few km (especially during fair weather).

With a good GPS and understanding of radio communications it wouldn't be that difficult to pull off I imagine...id be surprised if no one has tried it yet.

I picture the face of the strung-out speed freak huddled up in the corner of that parking lot who hears a loud crash sound, and goes to investigate.
