have you ever been to one? like it? hate it? how common are they in your area? discuss :)

i guess ne ohio has shitloads of drive in theaters compared to other areas. i was amazed at how many of my friends have never been to one. i think they are great :)

you pay $15/car, get to see TWO movies and can bring in your own food and drinks. whats not to love?

all the ones I knew of are gone now and have become a place for farmers markets and/or flea markets.
 
Ive been to one. It was cool cause the food was really cheap and it was $6 to see two fairly new movies.

They one have one in Sydney I think. I cant remember where it was located.
 
Ive been to a few,

Its ok if you are sitting in the front seat, but if youre in the back then its hard to see the screen.

Some drive in theatres have give you the option to tune the sound into your radio so its pretty good that way. Or you get this speaker that you hang on the inside of your window.. 1 speaker,, and if your head is next to it then it sux...
I snuck in once by hiding in the boot of the car.. sometimes they check but if you cover yourself with a blanket and they dont look under it then youre covered :)

Its a good setting for a date too.. go to dinner then see a movie, but with privacy (back seat make out session)
 
there used to be awesome drive-in movie theatres around central Ohio. I have great memories of going out with my mom and dad as a kid and watching movies late at night on top of their car. Jurassic Park was the last movie I saw in a drive-in (they appear to have all shut down), and it was most certainly a great drive in picture.

I wish they still had them around. I don't understand because I bet they would still bank in TONS of money.
 
they're all gone around here. i saw tons of movies in one when i was little - raiders of the lost ark, superman 2, empire strikes back...shit, way too many to list. this was back when you had to park next to a pole and stick a craptastic speaker in your car. later on they got that newfangled contraption called 'radio' where you tuned in the sound on your car radio.

it's a stupid flea market now.
 
theres one in san francisco area (san mateo) thats pretty famous,, its been in a few movies,,, its the only one ive been to. I saw Terminator 2 there and then years later some really crappy teen romcom
 
^ Are you talking about the one on Burlingame that you can see driving down 101? That closed several years ago. As far as I know, the only working drive-in theater in the Bay Area is the one in San Jose, which I go to from time to time. It's a lot of fun but the movies shown often aren't really the kind I'd actually spend money to see.

In San Francisco we have outdoor guerrilla drive-ins that show much better movies and are usually free. :)
 
Yeah, I live in Ohio, and have been to the drive in a bunch times. I love it. But it's gotta be for a movie that is fun, but that I don't want to completely concentrate on and perhaps miss any really important detail, cuz there are too many distractions at them.

Plus, since I drive a rav4, I have to park in the tall vehicle section, so your view isn't as good as when you can park really close to the screen.
 
I've actually gone to one twice in the past week. First I saw Bewitched/Mr and Mrs Smith then a couple nights ago I saw War of the Worlds/Longest Yard. Drive ins are freakin sweet IMO. I'm in OH and I guess we have a lot.

There's only like 400 and some left in the US, compared to over 4,000 years ago...:(

I also attended many drive in movies when I was younger. I would always go with my friends family they had a giant conversion van and all us kids would sit on the roof and watch the movies from there! I haven't been to the drive in what seems like forever. I think I might have to go back soon!:D

The last time I was there was 5 years ago. Im Australian but I grew up in san mateo/burlingame.
