Dreadlocks

well my dreads are pretty thin so I only have to blow dry for about 10 minutes and let them dry naturally for about 20 more minutes. Problem with mine is, whenever I wash them, some of the dreads get tangled into each other at the roots, so I have to sit for about 5 hours just untangling them, and thats once a week. I tried to wash them less often before, but I just couldnt stand it... my scalp just started itching and the smell of stale hair got to me (I guess you could get used to it though, since it doesn't smell bad exactly, it just smells like... hair).
anyway, I think all dreads look good, and I've never been happier with my hair! dreads r hot. =D

so washing your hair is yuppie? rofl

gotta love people who strive so hard to fit into their desired stereotype 8(

^^^Yeah that's why I don't dread my hair, I don't want to look too Jamasian ;)8(

I wash my dreads around once a month, every 3 weeks to a month. And its hard cuz i know when i wash them there needs to be enough time for them to dry before bed (its not the best sleeping with wet hair!!) so it normally makes it another week till i wash them... hehe

But honestly, the LESS you wash your hair, the LESS oily/greasy it gets. At first when you dread your hair and dont wash it, its gross and greasy, but as you start cutting down on washing it and using products in your hair, you can go longer and longer between washes as your hair is producing more natural oils... blah blah.

The only time mine smell is when ive been at the pub, the fucking smoke gets in my dreads and sticks around for a bit. grr... So after a big pub weekend i normally will wash them.

I love my dreads... have had them for 18 months now, oh how time flies!!!

Oh and when i dreaded them, as fake as it sounds i was bleaching my hair blonde, and it actually helped the dreading process because it makes your hair really dry... So i used bees wax, a lot of teasing the individual dreads, and a good few months of maintenence before they properly dreaded.

But now, i dont do shit to them... and there fine :) it takes a bit of dedication at first, but once there dreaded its not too much work. Do it Poetress! :)
(note: i was lazy and didnt read the whole thread so plz forgive any double things ive said )

ive had dreads on and off several times.. and all i really did was let it grow out to the desired length, then looked up some instructions on the knotty boy site.. got the shampoo, and backcombed and knotted the shit out of it one day after having someone section it off for me.. they formed what looked like dreads after being backcombed and shit, then you just keep playing with it, i didnt wash them for about two weeks and wore a really big beanie [dread tam to those who want to be proper] over them at all times.. used wax and just kept rubbing em.. then started using the dread shampoo and following the instructions carefully. i am caucasian/latin and had naturally curly/knotty hair anyway, i assume that helped, but after a few months i had nice, strong dreads, that didn't smell and stayed together. dreadlocks aren't just a hairstyle, it's a lifestyle, its alot of work to get them to look good.

there aren't any rules to all this matted hair, and you know your hair and your postion better than anyone else.....just be patient!!!

poetess......what are your thoughts on all this and your own hair?

:)

I love my hair a lot. I love it's versitility. I love it's look. I love the color. I love it. Dreads sound fun and different but I really don't know if I could part from my native american hair... heritage.

my friend had really lovely dreads (that I had made!) but had to take them out because she found her scalp was full of sores! Anyone know why this could have happened? I figured it could have been an allergy or something because she didn't wash her hair for about three weeks and she'd put in different kinds of wax and gels almost every day. Just hope it never happens to me....

i would say it was the wax and gels, and not washing.....stay far away from wax and other chemicals, i'd say.....

also, moving from washing your head every day or every other day (t's what she was doing), to suddenly not washing your head for three weeks is going to put your head in a pretty confused state....i suggest going from the often wash, to the seldom wash schedule gradually (that's what i did)

It could also be the weight from the dreads and the fact that they pull at the head... have had few lil sores over the year at the part where the dreads are.

No biggie.

I need to work on my dreads. Im so lazy.

She could also simply have had a sensitive scalp, and the weight of the dreads (or the process of the dreading) could have pulled her hair a lot at the root, causing hair "bulbs".

Taliana is right, they usually aren't a big deal - your scalp needs time to adjust.

Well I've had my dreads for almost 6 months now and I don't have sores or anything, so it probably won't happen (one hopes).

I need to work on my dreads too. The absolute, most annoying part of having dreads is how they tangle at the roots every time I wash them. I have to sit for hours afterwards untangling them.

But it's worth it! :D

I had dreadlocks for about a year and to tell the truth, I cheated.

I strongly recomend looking up www.knottyboy.com . I used their wax and hair soap and I got great results very quickly. On that site they have methods of dreading as well. As for getting rid of my dreadlocks, well, I shaved my head. And it was cold. very cold.

What shampoo do all the dreadheads out there use to wash their dreads? I use normal shampoo because I haven't found anything else where I live, but I keep hearing about normal shampoo leaving residues in your hair, like perfume, conditioners, etc, and that this might lead to mildew in the hair. Something I don't really want any time in the near future. So, just curious to hear what you guys do.

Be honest!

i ll be honest: i strongly dissaprove and dislike this hairstyle. why do u wanna have dreads? i m afraid i dont understand those reasons ...unless it's a religious thing? r u a religious person? ( well, i m not, i hate god, and that's ez to say cuz there's no god;) )

---> i have no respect for dreadlocks unless it's a religious thing, ppl with dreads look ridiculous. no i m not jealous, my hair is long enuf ;)

peace

glitterbizkit, for now I'm using knotty boy dread shampoo bar... it's all natural... but I"m looking for something else to use--

anyone else use all nautral soap to cleanse their locks?

Mike DMA-- why does it have to be religious? what about living simplistically? have you ever heard of the new minimalist movement? why isnt simply living a natural lifestyle reason enough to let your hair lock?

no i have never heard of that, could u explain it to me , i might be interested

it doestn have to religious, but when ppl are dressed in a ridiculous way or when ppl have funny haircuts it normally has some thin to do with relegion, it's very ez to hide behind ur relegion, and i thought that "in da beginnin" dreads was a religious thing somehow ( i could be wrong ) ...whatever, i strongly dislike dreads...why dreads? dreads are not kewl. if dreads are kewl then perming ur hair is even cooler.

puttin dreads in ur hair seems very complicated to me, i wouldnt know how to do it and i dont wanna know to be honest. if u wanna live simple u shouldnt put dreads in ur hair, that's just makin things complicated. quite logic to me, why doin so much effort to have dreads? why not keepin it simple --> no dreads

what is natural about dreads?? i dont understand , i m afraid, dreads dont grow in nature, it's somethin the human mind has created/invented. i think dreads is ideal for attentionwhores/stereotypes.

but i know what ur talkin about, from my experience ppl with dreads are ppl that wanna have an "alternative" lifestyle ( whatever that may be ) and they all tend to like nature alot ...that's a good thing, but what are they actually doin 4 nature???

Dreads used to be the standard hairstyle for man - before the days of shampoo and such. YES, dreads do grow in nature. Dreads now are much more groomed, but dreads go way back into history, and many different cultures.

Oh, and I think you should watch it with the namecalling - personally, it bothers me that you are saying dreads are for attentionwhores and stereotypes. Way to label people.

if u wear dreads YOU are labelling YOUrself, cant u c that?
that's why i dont like dreads, i dont like labels.
if u wanna label ur self , go ahead. i dont mind and let's be realisitic, i m just tryin to proove a point, therefore i need to exaggerate abit.
dreads dont grow in nature , that's a lie, if u have dreads it's becuz YOU created em. dreads fuck up ur hair and u know that, it's not healty for ur hair.

and hey : offcourse not everyone that has a dread is a fuckin stereotype, but i just wanted to point out the "risk" or let's say the consequences of havin dreads. i have met extremely stereotype ppl...so i know what i m talkin about and i know ppl that used to have dreads and that might have dreads in the past, so what, that's fine with me. it's their decission.
