i want dreadies again but my har is too short. I'm having fun cutting it into different styles and colouring it all funky colours right now though. I'm going to be a primary school teacher in less then three years so my time with dreads is probably over *sniff sniff* oh well...still absolutely adore them on everyone who has them though...yuppies? out of fashion? who gives a shit...dreads aren't supposed to be about fashion at all...it defeats their purpose

I wash my dreads regularly... I don't think all dreads have to look dirty and unruly. And they're not that hard to keep clean, really.

the problem with washing dreadies too often is that doing so can trap water and shampoo residue in your dreadies...this, in turn, can very quickly turn to mildew or mold!!! and mildew and mold are sure to stink and be a lot dirtier than a bit of normal dirt and oil and ganja smoke stink ;)

Thats why you just have to dry them properly and thouroghly each time. I think i might have said it in this thread already but its so long and been here for ages i can't be bothered lookig lol but i only washed mine once a week because thats all they arelly needed *shrugs* man i don't even have dreads anymore but i still always am drawn to this thread *sigh*

I think they look filthy dirty and untidy all the time. It looks like a nest of hairy dirty worms sitting on your head. Disgusting on anyone, male of female, black or white.

But thats just my opinion, when it comes to personal appearence (sp), if you like something, I believe you should do it regardless what others think.

doofqueen: figured someone would say what you did. yeah, its important to rinse and dry them extremely well, but i'm of the opinion that you can never get all the residue and moisture out of your wormy birds nest ;)

that's why its best to avoid water the best you can

this kinda depends on the dreads, but i really dont think they necessarily look dirty and unruley if you dont wash them regularly [by regularly, i mean about once a week.]

i wash mine once or twice a month. call me dirty all you want, but they just dont need much more cleaning than that. justsoemguy is right, its really hard to get all the moisture out of your hair. ive blow dried my hair for 45min straight, and there was still moisture trapped in them. the thickness and length of your dreads has a lot to do with it. mine are fairly thick and long, so it takes a reeeeally long time for them to dry. im a lazy hippie, i dont have time for that shit once a week.

i kinda prefer the "birds nest" look anyway. people who have really well kempt dreads, more power to them. but if you ask me, you shouldnt have to "work" on your hair. just let them do their thang.

i find that Caucasoids' dreads, generally speaking, look more birds-nestier than people of African descents' dreads. we whiteys just have finer and straighter hair for the most part.

of course, this is all fairly obvious, and i don't know why i just posted it on the sixth page

keeping your hair wrapped tightly in a towel should help to get the water out of your dreadies... maybe even get a towel sized shammy :D

my dreads stay wet for at least a whole day---and that's after walking around w/ a towel that feels 50lbs on top of my head for an hour. ugh. i wash mine once a week AT BEST. i personally, dont feel that i'm dirty... my boyfriend doesnt mind it at all, actually he's somewhat infatuated with my hair--dirty or not. ::shruggs:: mine are far from "well kept", completely natural.
