What software do people rate as the best to draw (sketch) molecules so that the pictures can be put into a (for example) a word document?

Haribo1 (a.k.a. piglet), try emptying out some of your old messages since your current box is full.

Chemdraw is the best, theres a new version out apparently.

I was having issues with the current program (2006) crashing when I tried saving 3D animated gifs.

Check my Wikipedia files for some examples of chem art from a genuine Chem Master. I'm surprised you thought SphinX was responsible for this project. Not because it is especially impressive, but because the Pharoah was unable to even draw molecules such as 3-hydroxy PCP on a computer screen. He frequently showed not just a lack of chemistry knowledge, but an inability to learn in a more general vein. I know it goes back to when I included some info on pharaohfentanyl in the ohmefentanyl section though. I erased that in the end though since it was not really convincing enough for my liking.

Some of the stuff I have even drawn with paint. Getting the two aromatic rings in the structure of indatraline to match is harder than it looks. I'm not sure if the pentagon is exactly right, but I spent ages ensuring that the two types of aromatic rings (horizontal lines vs. vertical lines) is exactly correct.

Also, Qutemol 0.4 is the most beautiful nd professional looking animated chemical structures you will see. Just PM me if you want some assistance in getting it to work and are having problems. I havent used it in a long time but its all in the mind, I assure you.

isis draw is free and can open most chemical drawing files as well as export them as graphics.

chemdraw is still better but expensive.

ChemDraw.
Have just got QuteMol to give it a try, thanks for the reference Smyth.

OK, this is what u do: Using chemdraw, copy & paste the molecule into chemdraw3D, then save it as a "protein databank" filetype. Next, open the Qutemol application and drag & drop the "protein databank" file you created into the the appliance. This will get you started.
Phenyltropane.gif
Also, the molecule may initially be quite small on the screen. Hold down the shift key and use the mouse to resize.
