30-40 mg is an absurd recommendation for a first time dose of pharmaceutical grade amphetamines, given negligible experience and tolerance with similar drugs. 10-15 mg is a decent first time dose.

Ofcorse you were 'affected'. You could take 5mg and be 'affected'. I think the OP could explain what he's trying to get out of it and that might help a little more. If he's looking for something to help him study, stay focused without some crazy high then yes 10-15mg is the way to go. If he's taking it for the sole purpose of getting high, I can just about guarantee he won't be satisfied by just having it 'affect' him at 10mg. Especially considering how he's gonna feel later. The first time I took Adderall was a 10 mg dose and I was affected for 8 hours. It's not like cocaine you're just trying to get high; it's also an experience that has affective components and a much steeper comedown -- hell, I'm sure to some it would feel surreal.
At a minimum, dose 10 mg and wait 90 minutes. You'll be plateaued and if you decide you want to do more crush up some more and it'll hit in 40 minutes on an empty stomach.
