'Donnie Darko' to be re-released

I didn't like the cellar door stuff, or the time travel parts, BUT i love the movie. What I love about it more has to do with the way the characters interact,

Yes!

I read the whole film as a study of Donnie's schizophrenia. Donnie's fucked up. Jake plays him absolutely brilliantly (and then you've got the other characters as well). I never paid much attention to the time travel stuff - I don't think that stands up to a serious examination, but I think it's a great film.

I'm sure he has his own money concerns to think about, but this might just coincide with his desire to shed new light on his film eh?

I liked the film but it wasn't something I tried to give meaning to in a big way. I like loose ends sometimes! As my English teacher back in high school said, a lot of things are around just to make life a bit more interesting. I think this is one of them! I enjoyed the story, the sounds.

on topic, you're critical of this rerelease as a purely commercial move yet you laud 'school of rock'.
don't get me wrong, i enjoyed that too but it's transparently a commercial vehicle for it-boy jack black. it's hard not to see a mixed message there?

Can I help it if I like JB? I think he's one of the funniest guys around now... is a heeluva actor and not a bad musician either...

On topic... the thing I liked most about Donnie Darko was the casting of Patrick Swayze as a child pornographer con-man... classic shit. If they elaborate on that side of the story, I might just check out the re-release.

In Australia, this film had it's limited first theatrical release LAST YEAR. That's over 2 years late. I'd be glad for the re-release to hit here because it deserves to be seen (IMO).

On my first viewing I thought the movie was spectacular (i wasn't entirely sober)! But with each subsequent viewing, my interest and enjoyment decreases greatly. This is normally the opposite when I watch a movie for the first time while twisted. What initially appeared to be twisted and deep was revealed to be rather simple and shallow (for my liking).

My favourate aspect of this film is the casting and make-up. Every actor looks and plays like an exaggeration of their characters.

no - i was just using SoR to put your comments about the DD release being commercial in a real world context.

Is the 20 minutes of footage just the deleted scenes on the DVD?

Cause I really don't feel like buying it again...

I had to get Clerks and Dogma twice because they released it with extra shit... Cunts... Oh well the old ones made good presents...

It is a growing trend to re-release DVD's with directors cuts / extra features etc 6+ months after the initial DVD is released to try to get as many people as possible to buy it again, I read an article on the whole subject in a local paper explaining it all.... very interesting.

If you are a serious movie fan, my tip is don't buy new release DVD's as soon as they come out, in Australia they seem to drop by as much as $10 a couple months after release as well....

It opened in Seattle, Washington on June 2, 2002 (according to www.donniedarko.com). Apparently they are rereleasing it only in selected theaters (which ones I'm not sure). And the date for that is "sometime this summer" according to a geocities fan site that quoted a CNN story where the link doesn't work any longer. But the movie itself will be released on DVD sometime soon after it debuts in theaters (directors cut). :) :D :D :D

they had the relase date on the marquee in Times Sq for the AMC 25 there but my memory fails me....once again.

if you havn't seen the website, you gots to check it out

I watched the original Donnie Darko for the first time today, in one of my cinema classes. After the screening there was talk about the re-release and what have you. the general consensus of the people who had seen the deleted scenes was that they didn't see much of a point in adding them. It was noted that essentially people are curious beings who have an obsessive like desire to know. Given this the question of ambiguity was then raised, in that 'does a work become compromised when everything in it is explained?' One girl commented on this by bringing up the issue of mechanical reproduction and how what is said to be lost through it is the aura of the art work. i personally liked the original and would be (like and other normal person who enjoyed the film) purely curious to see these extra scenes BUT i think that ultimately it should probably be left as is because i think that ambiguity is as essential to art as it is to life (of course the two being mutually exclusive) :)

just saw the re-release in NYC and i must say... i liked it more than the original. it seemed to better tie together the events that took place through the movie. alot more things just flowed together better and it almost seemed as though this version was partially used as a way to explain some of the hidden meanings.

all in all... just f'n amazing!!!!!!

Think Blade Runner though... they re-released that with the voice over and the alternate ending. In that movie i guess it was a bit more obvious that they'd gone back and added those bits in an attempt to make the film more accessible to a larger market.

i guess maybe this isn't the case here, actually i'm really quite interested to see these scenes now. i wish she'd been able to show us in class :)

I have yet to see this whole movie... Last two times I have watched it I was stoned and just sort of wandered off at some point in the film. Also I can't remember much of it. :D

I will definatelly see it in theatres if it comes out anywhere near me. I have a buddy who refuses to buy or watch Darko until the new version comes out.
