'Donnie Darko' to be re-released
Movie has become cult hit on video
Wednesday, April 21, 2004 Posted: 1350 GMT (2150 HKT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- "Donnie Darko," a cult drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a disturbed teenager, is getting a new theatrical release, featuring 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage.

Newmarket Films, which released the film in 2001, is unveiling a director's cut at the Seattle Film Festival on May 29. It plans to release the film theatrically in Seattle before moving into other markets later in the summer.

The new version will also have new visual effects and music.

"Even though I am proud of the theatrical version of the film, I've always felt that the story was somewhat compromised in order to come in under two hours," said "Darko" writer-director Richard Kelly. "With this version I feel like I've finally been able to complete the film."

"Darko" grossed just $515,545 at the domestic box office but has since gained a following on DVD, where it has grossed more than $10 million domestically. It also stars Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, James Duval and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

20 more minutes of footage! :)

That's pretty cool! I don't even remember hearing about this movie in 2001, were there any commercials for this even? I heard about it on bluelight :)

Donnie Darko is one of the more interesting movies I've seen in awhile. I'm psyched it will finally get the bow in the theaters it deserves.

lame 8)

funny how richard kelly never mentiioned anything about the story being "compromised" in the dvd directors commentary, in fact i cant recall him even once saying he had to make it less that 2 hours, but hey !!!! if u can re release it again he magically remembers his " artistic vision" ....sell out

Unfortunately I couldn't tell you. I heard about this movie from the local paper advertising a midnight viewing of the "cult classic". So of course I had to go see it. :) And I don't ever recall seeing trailers for it.

I don't see how a director who wants to promote a more complete version of a film that got absolutely no support during its first run is selling out...

it used to be about the music maaaaaaaann

Pounding_Grooves you may be onto something here.... wait a minute... what are you implying?? are you trying to say that re-releasing this movie is all about profiting from the johny come lately dvd fans? so jaded, for shame;)

Pounding_Grooves: Clearly he DID say that about 30 times on the director's commentary on the dvd. I distinctly remember him saying this in the commentary on the deleted scenes.

"Ah yes, another scene I was forced to cut to get it under the 2 hour Sundance time limit. I really liked this scene...too bad" -- Richard Kelly

He said the above MANY times on the commentary.

He is FAR from a fucking sell out, do a little more research before you start talking shit.

I've been waiting for a rerelease of this film, it deserves it and I believe the full version of the film will be great.

I hope this release also makes it to Australia :)

I really enjoyed this film but I do agree that the story needed a bit more to tie things in together a lot better. The extended version should be fantastic :)

CB:)

Is the 20 minutes of footage just the deleted scenes on the DVD?

Cause I really don't feel like buying it again...

I had to get Clerks and Dogma twice because they released it with extra shit... Cunts... Oh well the old ones made good presents...

^^ Thanks for your opinion. It was a wonderful one indeed. Any REASONS for why it was such a terrible movie, or are you just daring to be different?

I'll give you a reason. I didn't like how the story was told. It felt like, and again this is just my opinion, but it felt like this movie was wierd to be wierd. And for me, in a bad way. I like strangeness, its just that this movie didn't vibe with me.

i think the only reason the movie should get a re-release is that it wasn't exposed to enough people to first time........no one has heard about this movie through advertisement it has all been through word of mouth. Personally i enjoyed the movie and the entire cast and think the new release is deserved, even if there are people out there the movie doesn't "click " with. oh... and did ya know that Jake Gyllenhaal is engaged to Kirsten Dunst? and most of you probably know that Jake's sister in the movie is his real life sister Maggie? This is all a bunch of publicity stuff out there to make the rich people richer and the poor people poorer.
