"The Spirit of Light and Dark (A Report on DOM) Spring 2007"
I recently had the privilege of trying a rare, illegal compound that I acquired through a trusted buddy of mine whom I have known for quite some time now. The compound was already measured carefully in distilled water at a ratio of 1mg per unit, 10mgs per 1cc. I had roughly 150mgs of DOM on hand.
I was very excited to try the material after having a less than inspiring experience with DOC (2mgs), and I was determined to discover that there was a magic letter in the DO"x" sequence of compounds. The "M" was it for me. I was extremely impressed with the material, as I had always been curious about it due to its infamous history among psychedelic experimenters of the 70's.
Well, I suppose I'll get to the story.
It ended up being my best friend and psychedelic companion, "J", whom I have shared the majority of my experiences dealing with rare compounds as well as his girlfriend "L" who decided she wanted to join. We were at my house where I carefully measured 5mgs each for "J" and I and 3mgs for "L." Then, we were off to the lake where "J" lives and the place where many of my entheogenic journey's have taken place. I have written about this place in several of my trip reports now.
I believe we were all feeling the onset around 15 minutes upon arriving at the house which would have been roughly 30 minutes total after ingestion. We were preparing for a rather lengthy hike through the woods during this wonderful evening, gathering the music, backpacks, sweatshirts, water, and of course the flashlight, as we are fond of this particular woods at night. I remember being quite anxious to leave while all this was taking place, and I may have been rushing them slightly. I prefer to start off in a natural setting, as it typically arouses a serene mood, though just being near the lake was enough to keep me reasonably calm.
I suppose that initial anxious feeling was certainly an effect from the DOM. It wasn't long before we were off on our hike and feeling definite effects from the drug. We chose the album "Keys to Ascension" from Yes for our first musical journey as we crossed the creek into the woods. There was a feeling of stimulation flowing through me, as the normally breath taking stroll up the first hill felt like I had just taken a few small steps. That was the amphetamine character.
There was also a background feeling at this point that something extraordinary was about to happen, but it was certainly taking a long time to get there. There was a strange "building" of momentum with this drug. The only way to describe it is that you seem to look back at a certain point after waiting for the next effect and then analyzing it.
After we were further into our hike, probably around the 1 1/2 to 2hr. mark, there was a feeling of exhilaration and euphoria. There were similarities to both LSD and MDA, though none of them were extremes at this point. There was a unique flow with this compound. With the aid of the music, as well as the sunset, we were feeling very powerful as if we were marching with reason and purpose. Even though there were certain psychedelic effects at this point, the amphetamine characteristics were dominant.
However, as we turned back on the path as to evade walking through the lake campgrounds, the woods took on the form very similar to the cover art of a "Yes" album. Oh, the wonders of the subconscious mind. We were all feeling quite serene after we rested a bit, though that feeling of power had not dissipated. We were in the "Light." There was no typical realization yet, because our second musical choice had not come, but our first experience was a spirit of "Light." There were no negatives to be felt in a psychological sense. I say this because "J" is quite sensitive to amphetamine qualities, and he was already feeling it in his chest. I felt fine of course.
We all marched and watched as the visuals swirled about the dark and illuminated the skylines with vibrant, rainbow-esque color patterns. We took rest back at the house, yet there was something looming in my mind. This was far from over, and "J" and I both knew it as we passed the Cannabis pipe back and forth. We would have to depart for another adventure. In the beginning I had prepared to take a hike along the other side of the lake, but once we had left we both went on auto-pilot and did what we were comfortable with. This drug was far more intense than I had imagined judging by my DOC experience.
Right before we left, "J" and I looked at each other as we often do, and without words, communication came. "We have to get out of the house." "L" did not participate in the smoking of herb because she was already in the midst of a more intense experience than we had previously been in. She was thoroughly enjoying herself.
As we were walking down the road again toward the area where we crossed the creek, I noticed that the herb pushed me toward the peak of the experience. I had completely lost connection with reality, and so did "J." I looked at him, and simply stated, "I am extremely gone." I had once again escaped the realm of time. Everything went distant, yet so near to the heart. Thick visuals swirled about the neon road. It was difficult to walk, as walking seemed quite pointless. We weren't really going anywhere. Physically we were, but mentally, I was in a completely different space. Time had stopped. Fear and awe crept over me. I have rarely had such an intense experience.
I think at this point, I had scared "J" a bit, as he was very quiet. He seemed worried. I didn't mean to, but I was feeling the same fear, yet I wasn't as bothered by it. I welcomed and embraced it. I knew I was perfectly fine. A little later I realized why "J" had that reaction, but for now, I was void of reason. All I knew is that we had to get off of the road as quickly as possible. There aren't many cars that go by at night there, but to be sure, we headed back into the woods. Yes, we were that intoxicated. It was amazing to me. The colors were shining like the sun. Thick textures that you could taste and smell. There were so many layers! I have never seen this many layers before. It just kept going and going like a spiraling kaleidoscope unending and forever unbound to the forces of the universe.
Soon, while approaching the hill we had so easily strolled up earlier, "L's" voice finally broke through. The flashlight gazed up onto the path, and the words "It's kind of creepy this time" echoed in my head as they left her. I had almost forgot I had put King Crimson's "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" in. The music just seemed to flow with the intense visual extremes. It was more seen than heard; more felt than thought about, yet there were thoughts streaming from the subconscious pertaining to the visuals introduced by the flow of the music. Twisted, confused, perplexed we walked until "J" had enough and was slain to his knees, praying out to God. I had never seen such an extreme reaction out of him. Reality was getting to him, and I believe he feared for his girlfriend even though she was completely fine.
Seeing how intoxicated we seemed, "L" started to think we were messing with her, though we were merely hoping to make sense of something along the way of this deep, dark place. The spirit of "Dark" had come. The music took us to many places, each new feeling vastly different from the last. Some were unnerving, some peaceful but always dark. "What an incredible album," I thought. I don't want to write an album review, but for sure, that has to be some of the most intelligent, complex music I have ever heard in my life. The twisting and turning of emotion was vast. Everything seemed close again. Very close. There were shadow figures spinning on frails of textured patterns spiraling through the woods like witches on broomsticks.
I cannot even explain how wonderful the visual effects of this drug were. I had been more mesmerized by the visions of 2C-E as far as semi-synthetic phenethylamines go, but this was different. This was LSD-like. Very much so. In fact, it reminded me of high dose LSD trips, but there was an emotional content similar to empathogens with the lengthy mechanism of action of the Mescaline cacti. None the less, it was quite unique and had a high intensity level. It is not something I would ever consider giving to novice users.
We took another rest at a place along the path, and "L" stated, "I guess we'll be sitting here for a while. "Might as well," I said. There wasn't much else to do. There was that anxious feeling again, though it wasn't as noticeable now that we were in the midst of the experience. Finally, we made it to a big rock where we all sat for a great while.
I remember hearing the music and feeling that separation of being again. The flashlight was off, and it was very dark. The visuals think. I thought, "maybe if we turn the flashlight on, we'll be able to see better." Nope. I found myself with the flashlight in hand, pointed at the ground, staring. The plain rocks and stones on the path looked beautifully intricate like wonderfully sculptured sea shells in many light colors. This was amazing.
Then, "J" ended up having an emotional outburst about his life as far as his passions and frustrations go. Whatever was hidden within him came flying out like gunfire.
One thing he mentioned later about the compound is that you cannot kept your feelings hidden. Everything is revealed; laid out on the table and discussed. I listened with concern and compassion. I understood where these things were stemming from even though I didn't quite agree with some of the things he said. He was just having a difficult time dealing with the way he felt about himself, but we made it through. He seemed bothered by feeling as though he was putting a damper on a good time, but I assured him that I didn't come out there to merely have a good time. I never do when it comes to these experiences. Always prepare for the unexpected.
Not too long after this, "J" felt better as we all noticed the effects dissipating. I remember him saying, "Yeah! I feel like I'm peaking on Acid!." That's how intense of an experience we shared together. We felt the same, but interpreted it differently. There was just a place that he felt uncomfortable being in, and it was certainly coming from his sensitivity to amphetamines. I mean, I see it that there is a little more to it than that. I think it was meant to happen because he let go of alot of things that may have never been released sober. I just hope it taught him something, as I was having a wonderful time knowing that I would definitely travel via DOM again.
I also remember him asking me a few times, "Are you sure you've tripped this hard before?," revealing to me that he was having difficulty handling the experience. This is coming from an "experienced traveler," as A. Shulgin would put it. Be careful when experimenting with psychedelics, as there is always that element of surprise. Even an experienced user can become frightened. This reminded me that my experimentation should have nothing to do with fueling the ego. I never want my thinking to venture into the realm of seeing "how far I can go." Take things for what they are, and you might just find beauty in them.
"L" seemed perfectly fine. She was having a blast, in fact. Finally, "J" got ahold of his emotions and he had the flashlight, looking at the sparkler box laying on the ground. "Normal textures!" he announced. "I can see normal textures!" We were all coming back to reality, though it would be a while before baseline, as this was probably around 6-8hrs. into the trip. We spent the rest of the time relaxing at "J's," and having some laughs. It was a mind blowing experience.
The next day, having got a couple hours of sleep somehow, came as a pleasant surprise. I felt great. I am not talking about a normal afterglow though. This was far from normal, yet the psychedelic effects were gone. What was left over seemed like a whole different aspect to the experience. I felt like I was peaking on some good amphetamines or Methamphetamine. I was running around from apartment to apartment telling friends of mine the whole experience over and over again. I felt like I might crash hard, yet no crash ever came. Just a soft drifting off into a long sleep. No negative after effects were there. A more than pleasant experience indeed.
DOM was certainly a plus in my book. I found it to be fully as impressive as LSD and MDA as far as human altered substances go. I can't really compare it to 2C-E (my favorite semi-synthetic if I had to name one) because of the type of character it has. It is not like other phenethylamines. There is something really intense about it, and only before and after you reach that "point" is it forgiving. There is an explosive peak similar to Mescaline's effects, but it feels like something far more intense in the mind than the spirit. The way it courses through the body and brain reminds me of Mescaline, but the visuals and body experience are intense like LSD and MDA. However, the whole experience is uniquely DOM.

Extension of DOM: (From "J's Perspective)
I talked to “J” today about this experience, and he told me a few things from his experience that I wanted to mention.
The point where I mentioned the shadow figures, he seen something very similar. There were two figures. One was white, one was black, and they were spinning on a wind. This furthers my “Light” and “Dark” perspective.
At one point we had to remind him that he collapsed and when he got up, he said he saw the lights get up and walk away from him.
Again, there was a point, similar to when I saw the seashells, he was overwhelmed by seeing the eyeballs in the night. He turned on the flashlight, went over to the other side of the path, looked at a piece of moss, it flipped over, turned into an eyeball, and blinked at him.
