what concerns this post, is that the 'little place' is an organ that is permanently damaged after your first time of H and nothing changes that. it is also the thing causing the ultimate addiction. so far the addiction could only be cured psychologically but now there is also the physical method that in theory, should free you from the add. for good. which is basically good news
You read the article wrong or something.
There have been physical treatments for heroin addiction for a long time.
And while the physical aspect of the addiction makes it really hard for junkies to get clean, that is not the only reason they keep going back.
Even if heroin actually did change a brain and you could preform surgery to revert it (this is complete bullshit and in Russia, their rehab programs involve beating and torturing people), you wouldn't be erasing a person's memory. The memory is very important because anyone can remember how good heroin made them feel and how it was a temporary cure-all to their problems and they'd want to use again.
In rehab yesterday they were asking me part of why I kept using again after repeated efforts to stop. Simple. I'm depressed and even though I know in the long run that heroin is going to cause more problems, being clean is not going to take care of my immediate problems. It's just a lot easier to say "who cares, I can worry about it later" and just keep shooting up.
And this goes for basically all drugs, not just heroin. There is a reason why drug treatment is a standard thing and you don't really see a lot of groups that specialize in treatment for people with the same drugs of choice and such. While drugs do often change brain functioning in a way to reinforce repetative use, addiction is still almost entirely a psychological disorder. The drug a person is taking is really unimportant. Addiction is a compulsive behavior disorder where a person uses an obsessive activity to deal with other problems or issues in their life. The mechanisms of drug addiction are almost identical to those of people with eating disorders or compulsive problems like gambling addiction.
One of my biggest arguments against Narcotics Anonymous is that the program DOES NOT treat addicts. It replaces their compulsive drug using with compulsive meeting attending and becoming obsessed with working on the 12 Steps. That's why the program constantly tells people to keep coming back and that they will go back to using if they stop. Of course they'll go back to using. You never changed anyones behavior. You simply taught them to be addicted to something other than drugs.
