Doggy-style is degrading to women?!

So, was reading this week's Savage Love, and one of the letter writers said that his girlfriend claims that doggy-style is degrading to women so she won't do that position for him. http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/SavageLove?oid=14780741. This seems extremely perplexing to me, and don't really understand that point of view. I did some rough google research on that mindset, and the common consensus seems to be because there is a lack of eye contact, that some women perceive this to be a lack of intimacy.

For me, this is one of my favorite positions because the sensations are so much more intense, pretty much a guarantee for multiple orgasms. I have never felt that this position entailed any loss of intimacy, because having sex with someone, especially someone you love, is an extremely intimate act, irregardless of eye contact or not.

Just was wondering if any bluelighters think that doggy-style is degrading, and if so, why?
 
We all have our own preferences when it comes to sex, sexual positions, and what we like and dislike.

As for Dan Savage he's a media whore, bigot-he's very biphobic and transphobic, misogynistic, a bully, and not any sort of expert on human sexuality, politics, or LGBT issues at all. As friends of mine in Seattle say "It's best to ignore him."
 
If it's the lack of eye contact thing, then reverse cowgirl would be considered degrading too.

Personally, I think the concept of 'degrading' is in the mind of the beholder and not in any specific act in and of itself. Could be that the letter writers girlfriend has low self esteem issues and feels that position makes her his bitch (in a doggy sense!).
 
That's hilarious. If you're a big enough tool to be in a relationship with a girl that won't do doggystyle then that's your fault.
 
My wife doesn't think it degrading but she hates it because she claims it feels weird on her stomach. She lost a lot of weight a while back and thats where its still soft.
 
I don't mind it @ all but depending it can be uncomfortable sometimes..

I know lot's of women that love doggy style and i don't see why it would be degrading to woman. I mean wtf are you going to do it in the missionary position all the time. Fuck that :p . I love giving it to a chick doggy style it's awesome because you can get some really rough sex going.

Not to go too off topic, but I feel like it could be the other way around for BJs. Then the female giving the BJ is in control!

I don't really see how doggy style is degrading. I think doggy style is more sexual and less intimate than, say, missionary. But it doesn't mean it's degrading.
The being said, I don't like doggy style. I have only done it a couple of times but it is awkward and uncomfortable and it hurts. My own personal opinion on that matter though. Luckily my boyfriend doesn't like it any more than other positions.
 
The guy has to do it right too. I've been with guys who have no idea what they are doing back there and some who are tall and make it difficult to keep it in. Hard to explain, but yeah it has depended on the guy with me.
 
I like almost anything as long as it doesn't involve feet or anything that involves the doo doo hole..
 
I am female and I don't think its degrading. I like it sometimes for a variety of reasons, but it usually does not hit my girly bits in a way that gets me off. But that's not always the point.

A lot of the hype about tall men is just that...hype. Short men are the ones that can actually deliver the most pleasure across the different positions. ;)


On topic, there are basically two ways that a man can work over a woman: he can make love to her or she can be fucked by him. Doggystyle definitely falls into the latter category. And I think what happens with some women, especially those not that sexually-experienced, is that they want to 'make love' because they worry that wanting to 'be fucked' will make them seem/feel/look like a slut or similar. In a healthy relationship, I think that this all evaporates and instead each session ends up being determined by whether the couple is in the mood for romance or animalism. And I think that after most women have been through the experience of a relationship where there is enough trust that each knows that no judgment is going to be made based on what type of sex the other wants, these types of fears will be better understood as mostly irrational.
