Dog 'saves woman's life' by eating her face

A GRANDMOTHER whose face was chewed off by her own dog has credited the beast with saving her life.
Wendy Hamriding, 53, knocked herself unconscious when she fell down the stairs, The Daily Mail reports.

Mrs Hamriding's dog Cassie, a Rhodesian Ridgeback cross, tried to rouse her without success. As her efforts became more frantic, Cassie started nibbling at her owner's bloodied face.
When Mrs Hamriding woke in extreme pain two hours later, Cassie had eaten her right eye and the bone around the socket.
Mrs Hamriding was taken to hospital, where she stayed for three months while plastic surgeons reconstructed her face using flesh from her stomach and leg.

The dog was put down.

At the time, Mrs Hamriding could still see with her left eye, but she lost all sight during the plastic surgery and skin grafts that followed, the Mail reports.
Now, two years later, her sight has been partially restored by a procedure called osteo-odonto-keratoprothesis. One of Mrs Hamriding's canine teeth was removed and shaped so an "optical cylinder" could be implanted in it. That cylinder was then implanted into her left eye.

"When they first told me that my tooth was going to be put into my eye to make me see, it sounded like something from a film," Mrs Hamriding says.
All of that might sound like an unnecessary ordeal to you. We'd certainly rather keep our faces, given the choice. But Mrs Hamriding says Cassie actually saved her life, because by eating her face the dog put an end to her alcoholism.

"Cassie saved my life and I would rather be blind for life than dead," she says. "Before this happened, I was weeks away from dying as a result of drink.

"I am so lucky to have had my life saved when I was so close to dying as a result of alcohol, and I am even luckier to have got my sight back."
Mrs Hamriding has now devoted her life to helping alcoholics, along with heroin and cocaine addicts, the Mail reports.
"I lost my eye and I lost my dog, but it was the best thing that could have happened," she says.

This all sound a lil weird to me lol

If this is the case power to her but I'm not letting a dog chew my face.

Side note I thought it was only cats that would eat there owners?..

This is strange, I guess it shows how non tame a lot of 'tame' animals are, I guess every cloud has a silver lining which seems to be the message of this article.

I've heard of another instance where someone overdoes on drugs and the same thing happened when the dog couldn't wake her. Unless this is old news and I confused the two stories.

Why did the dog eating her face save her? (or why does she believe that it did?)

Yeah, she believed she was about to die from being a chronic alcoholic.

I don't think the dog should been put down, it was trying to wake her, then it was trying to heal her wounds, my dogs do the same when I'm cut, they lick the blood off, I dont mind them doing it. I've been told their saliva has antiseptic properties in it, Im not sure if that's true tho.

The dog was just being a dog, it doesnt sound like it was being aggressive. It just kept trying to heal it's master.

Pretty sure their mouth is also full of bacteria that could get you very sick if it gets into your bloodstream.

This is one reason I dislike our affections with animals.

This left me puzzled.
One animal seems to be evil, so you question humans' relationship with all animals?
If one human is evil, do you feel the same way about humans as well?

It seems to be jumping a bit far, maybe to rationalize an anti-animal bias that you have?

The dog was probably on bath salts. Obviously I'm wondering how many drugs we can demonize from this face eating bath salt terrier zombie attack.

This is really confusing. I'm not sure that I'd want my face chewed off by my own dog but then again, thankfully, I don't drink that much to begin with. I much prefer cannabis. I often wonder how many alcoholics would be recreational pot users if, at the right time in their life-say-when they are experimenting-they have safe/easy access to pot. I honestly believe that my health is better than it would be if my drug of choice was alcohol, since I frequently smoke pot but do not suffer strong side effects as if I were drinking in the same way.

Yea I didn't say it right. I got lazy and sometimes I write too much.

I don't really dislike animals, but I never trust them. I don't consider the dog that did it as evil... just not something I want in my house. I don't dislike animals... Just our personification and "love" of them. This deserves more on my part as I'm not satisfied... Love is okay... I just feel they have their place.

Really I'm not satisfied with what I've said. Ice just heard stories like this. I heard one on BL years ago about a dog that bit a baby's head. I just think people forget that these are animals. Not your kids. Pet ownership is sick in a lot of cases. But life is sick (weakness I really mean... sick is only extreme). If it wasn't nothing would get taken advantage of ;).

Dogs are cool
