Does weed really make you stupid ?

I would also submit to you for consideration, that the very forum we are posting on as well as dozens of other pro-cannabis hobbyist sites are some of the most trafficked highest membership and huge content producing sites out there. Laziness is not what comes to mind when I grasp the breadth and depth users are willing to go to appreciate and advance our understanding of its use.

telling people who like weed about how much you like weed isn't exactly industrious. activity on message boards doesn't seem like a great proxy for intelligence, ambition or social function.

@thread - weed is not going to "make you" lazy or stupid. but if you smoke it regularly and heavily, it tends to lead to the same symptoms.

I'm pretty sure weed has some effect in the way that's strongly suggested all over this thread. At that, I would definitely note; it does not account for the way you're living and feeling -- it's incidental. Your life circumstances will have more input on your general state of mind than weed if you use it moderately. If you don't got anything going on and you're smoking for lack of a better idea what to do, 1) your circumstances are not enviable 2) you're probably compounding them, by abusing to compensate. And in general, the way you react to weed depends to some degree on your disposition and temperament and also your general circumstances.

People don't understand some of the time that psychoactive drugs have a powerful effect on us. It's easy to see in cases wherein prior heroin users are able to stay off the dope when smoking weed, but stoners can sometimes ignore the detrimental effects of the drug on their daily routine. Of course any individual drug affects people differently, and in the case of hallucinogens perhaps more differently; still though I'm tempted to agree that pot refocuses one's energy so that they're less apt to have a (societally determined, granted) productive lifestyle.

It became obvious to me that even when i scaled back my use to the point where it was almost non-existent - one or two hits off a joint a week - it was still enough to slow me down, boggle my mind a bit, and take away some of my natural drive. Mind you, I'm older, and my priorities are changing. I have to compete and cannot afford to drift too far out of the mainstream. It's just where my life is at right now. Frankly, I'm usually happy to be outside of regular society and view things through weed-colored glasses. And I do like some of the short term effects. Being 'stupid' though is something I should be avoiding. By nature, I've got a good memory yet when I'm smoking that gets reduced to average, or less.

So yes, whether you call it stupid or forgetful or slow...I do find that effect, and have pretty much stopped smoking.

I'm not a regular user, I smoke once every 2-3 months with my rolls but;

If I smoke pot, I become tired and lazy. It makes me sleep all day..
I won't make a daily or weekly habit of it. Being high doesn't make you smart or creative. You want to be like one, but actually a big NO.

If you're high from coke, you think that you're perfect, creative, charming etc. But acutally you are not.

Constantly using weed makes you less intelligent than before (that's for sure), there's no need to argue about it.
Everyday smokers will say it makes me creative bla bla.

But IMO, it's a drug and using it too much make you dumb. (like it or not)

This is an assumption I've been fed by T.V, movies and the behind the times media here. I don't feel any less intelligent when I smoke, even if I smoke a bong.

What do you guys think ? Does it effect your IQ (not your motivation - your thinking!) ?

Mind you I've written and studied for all my uni exams not smoking weed (just oxy) so I can't tell with academia.

Sorry in advance if this has been covered I couldn't be bothered to UTFSE ok.

i feel moah stoopid reading threads like this. shame on me and shame on op.

*no question is a stoopid question*

Cannabis can slow cognition during the "high", also affecting memory. These effects usually fade after initial use. Being a neuro-modulator, the effects can very significantly between different individuals. Overall Cannabis promotes neurogenesis and increases cell growth in regions important to healthy mood. The study that is most often quoted as showing brain damage was conducted by suffocating chimps with low oxygen smoke for extended periods of time. This resulted in hypoxic brain damage, rather than any effect of the drug. Studies working with iv doses of cannabis show no negative effects on cognition. It can however alter brain development in young children, possibly causing developmental changes.

The nature of the weed high is to make me lose focus, and it kills the part of me that is responsible for having the motivational drive to do things, so it makes me very lazy to boot. I think about doing stuff, instead of actually doing anything when I'm stoned. I become a passive burnout even with very limited use. It also has always made me extremely panicky and anxious out of nowhere. It is the opposite of relaxing. I have never met a soul who benefitted from the use of this drug. I've known all types of people who smoke it, and the story is always the same. They will defend their overuse of weed to grave, with the same common arguments such as "it's less harmful than alcohol" while they waste thousands of dollars on their nasty bad habit that gets them nowhere except smell bad with black lungs, and makes them less interesting to be around. Every time you see these potheads they are stoned, for the obvious reason that they are very dependent on it which they will never admit to.

When I'm stoned, it really does make me stupid. I am an absolute dumbass, useless fuck when I'm baked. When I'm off the stuff, I resume the course of my life as a successful engineer. When I'm stoned, that part of my life doesn't mean shit. All I care about is being lazy and getting another hit. I will spend $20,000 on weed without thinking twice about it, while irresponsibly cutting out money from other important financials, until I regain my intellectual ability after going through the hell of withdrawal and realize how I was chasing a high that I had too much of a tolerance to feel anymore. However, due to the deluding and addictive nature of the drug, I had to fully get off the stuff before I was able to admit to that. Cannabis has a strong addictive potential, as is exemplified by my severe addiction to something that made me plain stupid and lazy. The cravings to smoke this garbage and the nightmare of withdrawal were so intense that it took me 5 years of attempts to finally quit.

I know a lot of smart people who smoke pot every day. However, all of these people are running a big risk to their long term mental health, and all of them would be better off and even smarter if they never smoked this stupid trash. Smart people are still capable of making dumb decisions, as there are many different types of intelligence. Cannabis is a parasite that attacks humanity in an attempt by mother nature to slow down the technological progress of mankind and it should be ideally be eliminated from this planet. Legalizing it would be like setting off one big dumb bomb for everyone.

Lmao only if you had an opiate problem. then you would'n t say shit about a little weed. If your like this you should'nt be smoking or doing drugs anyways. lol

This is idiotic. When people are stoned they don't do as much.

That's a complete crock of bullshit if i ever saw it. I work 40 hours a week outside in the cold or heat and am definetly productive. My boss even encourage me to go "catch a buzz". If you're tolerant to it most people wont even notice your're high, at least with me. last summer i worked 2 jobs at 65 hours a week and smoked weed all day and guess what? i was still productive. If it makes you lazy then stop smoking, or have a better work ethic in the first place. You were probaly a natural lazy fuck fuck before you started even chiefing. pfft

I've never understood why people assume their own personal experiences are some sort of universal truth. I know many stoners..some are lazy and stupid, some are very hardworking and intelligent. I used to smoke quite often, and I will admit that I have experienced some issues with my long-term memory, but I don't think it has affected me intellectually. Now, I rarely smoke and it's almost always to calm down when I'm particularly stressed.
There are a lot of factors, a person's brain chemistry before use, the frequency of use, even the certain strains they are smoking. Certain strains turn me into a zombie and with others I'm ready to tackle the world.
Ultimately, I think if you're smoking pot but also keeping your mind active I don't think it will make you "stupid" (at least not in a long term sense..I can't speak for how smart you'll be WHILE stoned.)

Also...who the fuck spends 20,000$ on pot?
And withdrawal from pot?? That has to be purely psychological. Marijuana is not physically addictive.
Try heroin withdrawal. THAT is pain.

I like the ideas stated already that instead of really destroying motivation, it just makes everything much harder to do. I would just sit and trip about what I'm not doing with my life sometimes, but feel totally inadequate and unable to accomplish anything. I was also that anxious paranoid one for a long time until I decided to put too much importance on weed and tried to adjust my brain to like it; which worked but just resulted in me isolating myself, limiting goals ect. But that's just me. I`m better off without it for sure.

You can't work without being high. Congratulations.

Why complain about people using personal experience and then use your own personal experience?

I said I don't like it when people use their own personal experience as a UNIVERSAL truth. I shared my experience but I clearly stated that's not how it affects EVERYONE.
