Hi I am a college student and in my Sociology class we have been asked to think of a question on a topic which is an interest of ours.. I've chosen to ask does the methadone progamme really help heroin addicts get clean?
Having seen the destruction it has caused to one of my best friends for the last 5 years, in and out of prison and her little boy put into foster care, she has all the motivation to recover and get clean but has yet to succeed on the methadone progamme after 5 years??
So im doing some basic research just to get peoples views of whom have experienced the methadone programme or know more about it?

out of all the people i know that are on Methadone Maintenance instead of the Suboxone program, majority i know only go every morning for they're dose to seek a buzz and search for benzos to potentiate they're buzz or doctor shop for benzos, as you get an increase of ur dose dailly when u first start off on methadone of course u will feel euphoria as it's a full agonist. IT may 100% True methadone is 100% effectice at opiate cravings and causing opiate blockage, many people dont even realize they turn hooked on methadone and benzos and are walking zombies, not even sober inside, or spiritual, one drug replacement for another.

To each its own, some people may take methadone properly, withot benzos and dont seek the high, in my opinion suboxone is the way to go it may not cause euphoria like methadone, but its great for cravings and opiate blockage and also has its mild euphoric qualities..beats going to a clinic every morning

I think this would work better in Drug Culture, you may get more answers there.

DC mods, feel free to move it back over here if you need to.

@ op is that Southampton in the UK ?
I've been on n off methadone 4 overv 15 years and i don;'t think it helps people get clean . But bit does enable them a time of stability where they can look at their addiction and try and make changes.
The drug itself is horrible and the withsrawl is far longer drawn out and worse than Heroin IME.
Methadone can be used in many different ways and alot of the succsesfull detoxes are when itsis regulated quite strictly and not overprescribed , i could go on 4 ages .
Get back at me if u want ?
You don't have PM status but you can e mail me . If it is in the Uk then obviouslywhat i asy will hold more relevance., but what i have alrerdy put down is pretty much across the board.

it can.....

its all up to the user really tho.....if they want to get sober, and they follow the program attending meetings and all that jazz.....then yes....

however, it can also not help......

never met a single person who it sucessfully cleaned up. everyone i know A) decideded they wanted to get high from the clinic instead of dope man but they never got clean

or B) joined up cuz of legal trouble.

however no i know has ever been like "liquid handcuff" program worked for me!

i dunno where im going with this

does the methadone progamme really help heroin addicts get clean?

This is a good question. My answer is..it depends on the person. If someone really wants to get clean and is dead serious about it, he could takr methadone and eventually taper off. But dope heads getting clean is a little tricky. The relapse rate for heroin addicts is something like 90%..however i have met a lot of people in NA, and theyve been clean for ages..im talkin like 10, 20, 30 years..old heads. Ive also met people that are middle aged like 40s 50s, they been usin dope since they were young adults, and they were on 'done. They would do whatever for a high..xanax, booze with their done. Lots of em smock rocks, smoke or bang crystal, etc. Too bad i dont know the percentages. All i know re this is my personal experiences, but i know a thing or two about this shit. So a lot of people just take methaone because its a more stable lifestyle than constantly shooting black. And like i said if they aint serious serious about getting clean, theyre gona be getting fucked up by taking shit like xanax booze crystal rocks with their done..and of course they still shoot dope even when theyre in the methadone maintenance program. Either way though, i think its better than being completely strung out. Know what im sayin?

Methadone, at least around here, has a bad reputation because word is people aint getin clean while they take it..like i said dope is very difficult to quit, the relapse rate is very high, even higher than booze i believe..but i think crystal has a higher relapse. Idk about that though, so i might be wrong.

For some it works

myself and a friend who had an equal size habit and was both injecting heroin at least 4 times daily both got on a methadone script at the same time.
Now 8 years down the line I am still on methadone and still using heroin on top of my daily dose whereas my friend has not used heroin at all for the last 2 years.
I guess it works for people who really do have the motivation to get clean. My friend has no interest in ever doing gear again,he can even sit in the same room as me while I take my gear as he is not tempted in the least.
So it can work but for most people I know it still hasn't stopped them using.

I've been on scores of Methadone programs and it never helped me or anyone I knew.I agree with people searching out benzos and also quite a few people I knew shot coke instead of dope.I'm on Suboxone and it has helped much more then Methadone.Except for today and maybe once every two months I try to get high. The fact that Suboxone has a blocker in it usually stops me from trying to get high.Unless,I have heard too much talk from other people about getting high, then I give in.I usually regret it though because I rarely feel much of anything.

And yeh,I do tell people not to mention drugs around me.If I don't hear about it,it doesn't bother me so much.

I think Methadone would work better for people if they didn't have to go to a clinic and get it.The talk on the waiting line is usually about drugs because that is the one thing everyone knows they have in common. If they would let private doctors give it out for addiction,it might be a whole new ballgame. If private doctors can give out Suboxone, then why not Methadone?

Something I forgot to say.I had a boyfriend that got on Methadone in 1968 and he was on it until he died from an overdose of Methadone,Xanax and heroin in 1998.He always bought Xanaxs and still shot dope too.His thinking was that the Methadone would keep him from getting dope sick as quick. He was a mechanic and fixed the counselors cars so they would pee in the cup for him.RIP,he was a great man, best boyfriend I ever had.A junky with morals.

I know people who were hardcore opiate addicts, and since going on methadone, they haven't relapsed since. But I also know people who tried methadone and then returned to opiates after quitting (or being kicked out of) the program. And then there's a few who are on the program but sell their take-away doses and secretly keep abusing opiates. So overall, from the cases I've personally known, I'd say methadone is only successful about 50% of the time.

I was on 70mg methadone daily for about 14 months, and I have since gotten off of both methadone and heroin.

It works for a few people, but it seems as if the majority of people either stay on it for life, abuse it, or end up back on dope at some point. Just a huge revolving door.

I don't have a lot of time right now but I have some more theories about MMT and whatnot I can post later.

methadone maintainance worked for me in an ironic twist of fate.
the social worker type that i had to see one on one weekly humiliated the shit out of me and i just determined that i would not continue with the program-i kicked cold turkey and never looked back.
i can't even remember the withdrawal rodeo that ensued.

thats what i was gunna say, but then i thought about it for a bit....

its sad but i believe 90 percent of patients on replacement therapy fail.......

its like people said before most folks end up substituting with something else
even tho its a movie, in drugstore cowboy when bob is talking to the methadone lady/

"Well, to begin with, nobody, and I mean nobody, can talk a junkie out of using. You can talk to 'em for years but sooner or later they're gonna get ahold of something. Maybe it's not dope. Maybe it's booze, maybe it's glue, maybe it's gasoline. Maybe it's a gunshot to the head. But something. Something to relieve the pressures of their everyday life, like having to tie their shoes. "
