Does pure codeine not exist in Ireland OTC?

I went to a pharmacy and tried to get Codinex (pure codeine phosphate without ibuprofen or paracetamol). They told me it's prescription-only. I checked the HPRA website (they're the manager of drugs in Ireland), and found that it is indeed OTC.

What gives? I've gone to many other pharmacies and they say the don't have it but are willing to give me Nurofen Plus/Solpadeine all which I don't want. Is it a fear of abuse?

If so, they've got it backwards. It's better for a codeine addict to get addicted to pure codeine rather than Solpdaeine which can cause liver failure with the amount of codeine someone takes or Nurofen Plus which can cause an ulcer in your stomach.
 
Codeine is prescription only in Ireland. You can get 30mg tablets from the dr. I’ve never heard of codeine being OTC on it’s own. You can get codeine linctus OTC.
 
I member back a few years ago people would get this no problem OTC and now in my opinion it will go Rx only soon.
I used to take it from my dad's wife's med cabinet, twice when i was sick. She got it OTC, shes a nurse and got it easy

But now days you got to find a sound chemist that will bring you aside and give it.

But try quick where you can before it goes prescription only!

In a nutshell, yes. It is legal for a pharmacy in Ireland to sell it (Codinex) OTC but many will either say they don't have it, or they'll ask for a prescription, or point blank refuse to sell it to you. I still managed managed to pick up a 100ml bottle today (Sunday) but it wasn't easy, involved being interviewed as to why I wanted it, etc. It's a lot healthier than a paracetamol or ibuprofen combination and I hope it doesn't go Rx only as that will push people, me included, to unsafe supply sources.
 
There is about 10-14 pharmacies in my town and all but 1 will ask a million questions or as @SkinnyJeans said they'll point blank say they don't supply it (unless your a 50 something year old lady)

Codinex is the last and only codeine Only cough syrup available, unless you want to destroy your liver with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

I will try get a bottle or three over the next few weeks bcos it will most likely go prescription only fairly soon, i'm surprised not already.

The chemist i use gives out methadone like most others but if you time it right with the right staff you might get lucky with a bottle.
Being Codeine phosphate 15 mg/5 ml (usually 100mg) if i remember is a pretty decent bottle to attain some before its Rx'd. And it comes in higher quantities if ever available!

Really you just have to get and try the right pharmacy. And say you tried all the rest, and need it for a unproductive cough. Best of luck anyone getting it!

Well,you said it! We always have to get creative anyway! If a granny gets it without a blink of eye ( like here too), grab yourself a granny ( as in- find a suitable one and dish her a sad story or whatever) and have her load up while you wait outside.
Really old people, dang!! I remember that old man, even made it into local news, who would turn up with a Aeroflot bag brim full of EVERYTHING. And a nice chap too. Very lenient on pricing. Would go Doctor shopping for 2months then turn up on the open scene.
Was prone to not go forever, but was i happy to see him back then! What this ramble means is, some old people are well aware of this thing, just gotta find the right one...
 
Hahaha....Well it looks like dressing up properly and speaking in a posh accent gets you some Codinex. So far I've been able to buy four bottles. I'm only in my 20s.

In bigger chain pharmacies it is being cracked down on you’re right but small town pharmacies with older chemists won’t question you. There’s a really old pharmacist I know still making his own cough mixture concoction that flies off the shelves. 😂
 
There's always the Cold Water Extraction method (lots of threads if you just type "CWE Codeine" into search) ....
Dunno how hard it is to get Co-Codamol in Ireland but a few pharmacies would be required.
OR! (Better yet) - Don't do Opiates / Opioids at all :)

My pharmacist said there used to be another pharmacist Hu did it in a very dodgy area here in n.ire, and just got scooped for the amount of bottles he was gettin in constantly and was just giving to people asking for codiene, which is as it shuld b, but nope, license gone, my pharmacist just says they don't stock it but it's a central location pharmacy
Your right about the ones in lil towns are best to get them, had a dependant mate Hu travelled an hour long train every 2-3 days to go to a certain pharmacy, then he discovered online lol

It's knowledge of abuse.

I've seen loads of people in here who are clearly deeply involved in opiates, saying theyre outraged their pharmacy wont serve them. And i think, yeah, because they know youre an opiate addict. Of course they won't. They can spot an addict or a hustler.

Sounds like you cracked the code though, good work! An Irish lass putting on a posh accent too aye? Very good work! ;)
 
Codinex is dispensed at pharmacist discretion.
So don't look strung out
Say your doctor told u to get it if you're cougg got worse.
It's a dry cough mind! No flem.
And perhaps pronounce the name wrong

Cotinex or codex cough bottle
 
Get some anti histamines for the itch
In a different pharmacy!!

Preferably H1 receptor targeters.
Nytol is like 50 mg diphenhydramine
It'll stop u scratching till u bleed and add to the goof and I believe it interferes with metabolism of codeine to morphine and codeine-6-glucouridide??? In a positive manner. I'm not sure if best to take before or after codeine for this reason!!

Or u could just buy heroin. Same sickness. I'm joking of course. Be wary of the opioid devil.
