At the methadone clinic I go to, the counselors and nurses are gone if saying that methamphetamine use makes methadone less effective, because "methamphetamine causes you to metabolize methadone faster."
However, the research I have done says this is untrue. Methadone is mainly metabolized by cyp2d6, and to a lesser extent by cyp3a4. Methadone metabolism should therefore speed up only if methamphetamine metabolizes cyp2d6 or cyp3a4, right? Well, methamphetamine is not an inducer of either enzyme to my knowledge.
Is there something I have missed here and methamphetamine use really does increase methadone metabolism? Or are the people at my clinic simply repeating something they heard that is incorrect?
