Does coffee/caffeine increase estrogen?

I used to drink coffee regularly until I figured that it increases estrogen. Since I do not want to become a woman I try to not drink it now. While coffee has a variety of alkaloids and compounds, the most abundant and significant one is definitely caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized chiefly by liver enzyme CYP-1A2 and is a pretty strong inhibitor of it. CYP-1A2 is unfortunately also the chief metabolic enzyme for estradiol. CYP-3A4 is the chief metabolic enzyme for testosterone.

Now, usually there is no reason to think twice about liver interactions. However, many of us drink 2 tablespoons instant coffee with milk, 2 or 3 times a day, and soda, for at least some 0.7 grams of caffeine a day. Correct me, but that means we are displacing some 0.35grams of estrogen from degradation (more or less depending on affinity to the CYP enzymes). Drinking just 2-3 cups coffee every day is not much different than taking a full month of women's contraceptives. And what is really upsetting is that liver enzymes do not rapidly upregulate- they do, but extremely slowly if at all.

I may try this when I'm older: Abstain from coffee and caffeine for a month, and go to some doctor to get a blood test of my estrogen levels, testosterone levels, cortisol levels, cholesterol, etc.. Then for a month I will drink instant coffee like twice a day and maybe a grande starbucks mocha like once a day, and after the month take the same blood test and see if estrogen levels are elevated.

Coffee is known for increasing estrogen dramatically in women, I am sure that this is by the CYP mechanism I am talking about and would be equivalent in men.

"Women who consumed at least 500 milligrams of caffeine daily, the equivalent of four or five cups of coffee, had nearly 70% more estrogen..."

holy shit.. i would like to know this also. i drink coffee all day at work

This is interesting. Drinking a coffee as I read this haha.

Caffeine addiction (srs) affects me quite a bit. Sleep in, wake up W/Ding and feel like shit for a few hours. Effects workouts, food timing and sleep. Today I slept in till 1130 or so, and by then I'm nearly on my 3rd coffee of the day when I'm in a routine. So I have to drink 2 coffees, then one a little later to 'catch up' and feel normal =\

This would be a good reason to get off my ass and quit (BUT OH GOD THE HEADACHES).

Anyone else addicted after 3-4 years of drinking coffee every day?

CYP-1A2 is unfortunately also the chief metabolic enzyme for estradiol

But generally males have far less estradiol to begin with. Less DHEA seems to go that route....

If it actually does, I would have to be a bitch by now lol. I drink more caffiene than anyone Ive ever known. I have an unhealthy addiction to it. But I doubt it causes aromatization.

A lot of body builders use caffeine supplement, does it come from coffe? Not sure.but green coffe been has been endorsed to burn fat ,lose weight which also means for some lowering estrogen. So. Think it deends all on the source and use. I read that it lowers it in men and elevates it in women. A lot on here need to do more research before they decide to quit their morning routine.

Coffee has been shown to increase testosterone and in doses over 200mg, cortisol as well.

I've never heard of it increasing estrogen.

I wouldn't use this study to apply to body building in men... it was done on women only in a very specific age range, 36-45. Now, if a study came out and said that caffeine increased estrogen in men ages 15-35, then I would possibly take a closer look.
