i guess if you consumed a lot of bicarbonate you might become alkalotic because you are essentially removing acid from the stomach, and that acid must be replenished from your blood. but your body has all kinds of mechanisms to keep your blood in a narrow range of PH (look up bicarbonate buffer system). my guess is that your kidneys would excrete bicarb and correct the balance pretty quickly. but im sure there are cases of people who has hurt themselves with excessive bicarb ingestion. too much sodium isnt good either.
it is given iv in clinical settings to get blood PH back to normal, but only after careful measurement and calculation of ion gap.
