The title pretty much says it all. I know some people swear by it as mental steroids, I also know a lot of people who say it just makes them awake, I've also met people who love it as a euphoric stimulant. For me it just makes me not tired, that's it.

People on Modafinil, what is your take on its recreational value.

I just want to also mention that I have no desire to get high off it.

The reason I take it personally is because it's specifically non-recreational, just gives you a bit of a "tunnel vision" and gives you a major hand if you need to focus on, say, an assignment at uni or a major project at work.

Just my two pence. :)

Yea man, I have big issues with lethargy and inability to focus from my epilepsy meds, modafinil DOES NOT help with that. It does - however - help with me getting out of bed and me be willing to do things I wouldn't normally have the energy to do. It also makes me get that tunnel vision thingy, I get stuck on one thing and can't stop. Like video games, I've been playing Skyrim for hours and I can't seem to stop! As helpful as it is for me in terms of waking up and such, my main gripe is that if I take it any time past 8am, I'm fucked... that shit keeps you up!

Before I took it I was hearing all these people say it was like steroids for your brain, how it changed their lives, how it's made them more productive than ever before and I gotta say that I've got nothing like that happening for me. I just stay awake. I've also heard people say it's an alternative to adderall and ritalin for people who are trying to get high on stims and I just can't see that being possible, that's why I want to hear people's two "pence" as you Celtic Brit's say, haha.

Any other opinions? I do really want to hear from someone who absolutely adores it.

It seems I can't quote any posts, the quote loading thing just spins round-and-around.

I adore Modafinil, I personally love stims. I have dabbled in opiates whether it be pills or heroin but it doesn't seem to pull me in or offer me what I need. I love the focus and productivity stims give me, which is why I love Modafinil. I used it for the last two years of my university study and I was like a well-oiled machine. Studying like a baws and testing even better. Although the recreational value is extremely low, I find the focus it gives me to be the recreational value initself. Although I'm not high per say I am high in the fact the focus provides me with a sense of self-satisfaction next to no other substance can offer me, illegal or prescription wise...

Yea, I get it to treat the crippling lethargy and intense sleepiness from my meds, it's very important for me to use it because my new job starts next Tuesday and I have to be up at 4:45am.

Have you noticed any long term effects? Does a tolerance develop. Most message boards have people arguing that particular subject.

I have taken Provigil (from research its the same drug, different name) and it has always kept me alert and awake. I don't recall much "euphoria" but basically a large dose of caffeine, but with longer duration. I definately enjoyed my rx when I had nothing else.

Personally I haven't experienced any tolerance as when even doubling or tripling my dosage it doesn't provide any heightened affects and euphoria is beyond reach with this substance. I'm sure Modafinil doesn't come without its issues and side-effects but after 24months of consistent use I'm yet to experience any. Although some people do find their sleep patterns effected but I myself am one of those weirdoes who can sleep on pretty much any substance besides lsd :p

Yea, the few times I took it mid-day was an insomniac's worst nightmare. Since I've gotten it I pop one at like 5am then go back to sleep and wake up at about 8 or so feeling ready to take on the world. I find that there are no jitters, but I also find that it has no direct "I want to get everything done" type feeling. That being said most meds take some time to really fully work.

Oh, one thing I found interesting is that increasing the dose has absolutely no effect, which to me is fascinating.

I have always had sleep issues but have gotten them under control with a strict exercise regime. I don't get the "up at attem" attitude but once I get on a roll things get finished efficiently and awesomely :p

I found a little nausea came on when increasing the dosages, but not heightened effects. Modafinil holds recreational value in the sense using it to "get high". That's my opinion anyway but I would love to hear from someone who does find that they can achieve a recreational high from larger dosages.

I find it nauseating and headache-inducing. A cup of coffee provides me with a better buzz. I was prescribed these for ADD, took a few and since then they've been rotting in the back of the medicine cabinet. Too bad since I really had hopes this would work and not be as pushy as ritalin/amphetamine but no :/

I find that upping the dose has essentially no effect on the strength of the wakefullness either, it would be intereresting to know why because quite a lot of my mates report otherwise.

I have to say, I find it far superior to amphetamines or methylphenidate with relation to studying (not overtly keen on amphet anyway, if I'm doing recreational 'uppers' I tend to stick to MDMA, Mephedrone or the 2Cx family). I have also found that popping a couple of low-dose caffeine tablets at the same time as dosing modafinil is beneficial - I read somewhere that there's a synergetic effect which seems to give you a tad more energy and for some bizarre reason seems to hit you significantly quicker too.

I have found one semi-recreational use for modafinil, and that is when used in conjunction to sativa-dominant cannabis strains. The modafinil kinda counteracts the 'mongy' feeling some strains give you, and the interesting thoughts that cannabis gives you seems to have more clarity, and it's easier to explore your ideas. I'd highly recommend it. :)
