Dodgy drugs put partygoers in hospital.

The severity of redback spider bites varies hugely. Many people only report very mild symptoms, others say it's excruciatingly painful. It's not generally considered life threatening though.

At least we don't have to put up with Bears here.

Don't forget Drop Bears. Many tourists have had their holidays ruined by the fear that one of these nasty creatures might fall on them =D

A pinch more serious - if you're a player, I'd less worried about our wonderful wildlife and be more concerned about the safety of our dodgy drugs :\

Our wildlife is exagurated, I was bitten by a redback in 9th grade and it just hurt my arm a little and gave me a headache.

I don't know about it being exaggerated... a close friend was bitten by a brown snake a few years ago and was in a bad way. Apparently he only survived because only one fang punctured his skin and only a small amount of venom got in (he was over an hour from a hospital). I had a family friend die from stepping on a stonefish too when I was a wee-little tyke.

As mentioned none of those come close to the danger of a ferocious, rabid drop bear though 8o

Brown snakes are hard core. I had to run one over one day as it was attacking a family that were waiting for a bus. They are one of the only snakes that you are advised to back away from and not just stand still as they are so aggressive.

^ Was that in Canberra? I grew up there and I'd never seen a snake outside of a store or show before, but I loved snakes and lizards... then when we moved to Brisbane, in the first house we rented there were snakes everywhere!

At that house we had this pool that was brown for some reason instead of a clear blue color, and after the pool cleaner found a dead snake in the bottom one day I never went in it again.

^we get them(browns) on our property quite regularly each summer. we've had a few come in the house over the years but they've never showed any agression thankfully. the biggest i've seen crawling around was definitely over the 7'' mark. our dogs have always taken care of them with no hassles, it's a spectacle watching a cattle dog snap and slip around a 4-5ft brown. it's comforting having the safety net as well:D

my fathers friend used to torment me about drop bears when i was younger:|

Yep. Start of summer is always bad here. The snake I mentioned was 100m from my house.

We'd probably better get this back on track before it is closed. I'm not saying that I am not to blame either :)

My mum stood on a brown-snake once. I used to live out in Kyneton on a farm when I was a kid, so we quite commonly had giant grey roo's come onto the property, and snakes out in the backyard. As well as an awesome dam full of yabbies, and a natural spring.

anyway, mum stood on this thing, and it went to attack her... luckily my dad was nearby and managed to behead the thing with a spade.

Even still, in the metro areas (and canberra is hardly a tourist attraction VB), you're not very likely to get attacked by our fauna.

I don't think this threads gonna get closed - it's derailed a bit - but the conversation is interesting.

Drop Bears FTW, dad used to give me shit about drop bears all the time. Hahaha, then when you get onto the meth, drop bears turn into 'bush ninjas' ;)

I was attacked by a drop bear once, it hurled a great white shark at me.

I live in melb se suburbs, and I've had countless experiences with the likes of brown snakes. People were always catching them near my primary school. I do live near swampy wetlands but doesn't mean they can't be anywhere. Maybe those Darwin caps were full of snake venom, mistaken for ketamine at a hospital

^ What's the attraction?

I remember Questacon was fucking awesome, the galleries and museums are cool but apart from those I can't think of much else and I certainly don't have any urge to visit again soon.

Well apart from being the capital of the country there are lots of attractions here. Most of the them are aimed more towards tourists from other cities and countries. We also get a lot of school kids here from interstate on bus trips.

The National Art Gallery has finished its extensions now and is always popular. There is the newly built National Portrait Gallery which attracts hordes of people every day. There is the Australian National War Memorial which always has a steady flow not to mention on ANZAC day where you can't get near the place.

Questacon is great fun for kids and families. Summernats has been here for 25 years. Floriade has been named as the best tourist event for a few years running now. Canberra also has a thriving Market scene with fresh produce, homecrafts and fashion markets emerging and growing stronger every month. There are lots more touristy things here and heaps of cool things that people don't know about.

Personally I don't rate the National Museum at all and think it is massively overhyped. While I disagree with you guys saying that Canberra is not a tourist attraction I'll agree with you that there is not a whole lot to do here for people in our age group. The nightlife scene is fairly tame compared with larger cities.

^Yeah the tourists are hippy human rights activists, chaining themselves to mailboxes and such ;)

They are mainly confined to the Parliament house and Embassy areas. You don't see a lot of ferals here. It is a VERY metro city. Of course we have our bogan suburbs though.

EDIT: I would like to add that I am incredibly biased towards Canberra but that is probably because I have my own key to the ice rink :)

VB, forgive my lack of geographical knowledge, or desire to use google maps - but what is the capital of Canberra? like it's not a city, canberra is a territory. NT has a capital, and we don't refer to it as "Northern Territory City"... I'm assuming the same holds for canberra.

Canberra is the name of the city. The Australian Capital Territory or A.C.T. is the name of the Territory Canberra resides in. Canberra is Aboriginal for "meeting place".
