Dodgy drugs put partygoers in hospital.

As many as 30 people have attended Royal Darwin Hospital after taking contaminated drugs at a party overnight, St Johns Ambulance says.

Police say they began receiving reports about 7pm of people collapsing, behaving irrationally, vomiting and in semi-consciousness.

"Investigations revealed that all of those affected had attended a party at an apartment in the city," Duty Superintendent Bob Rennie.

"At that party there were drugs being handed out and a number of people have taken those drugs.

"Just after 7pm we started having people dropping all over the place and behaving very erratically.

"We had one unconscious.

"We were at a loss as to what we had initially.

"We believe there may have been a person in the inner city selling contaminated drugs."

St John Ambulance operations manager Craig Garraway said seven people were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Mr Garraway said he had heard between 30 and 35 people affected by the drugs may have presented to the hospital themselves.

He said he had never seen anything like it in his 20 years working in Darwin.

Six people remain in hospital, with two of them sedated and in intensive care.

Duty Superintendent Rennie said police were not yet sure what kind of drugs were involved.

"We do have possession of some of these capsules that some of these victims had and they will have to be checked out by our forensic section and analysed."

Following the emergency, police entered CBD nightclubs and issued warnings on loudspeakers to others who may have attended the party.

The Major Crime Squad is investigating the matter and warning anyone who received drugs last night not to take them.

Duty Superintendent Rennie said if people choose to take party drugs, they are playing Russian roulette with their lives.

"They just don't know what they are taking."

I'll laugh if it was a decent hit of MDMA.

Oh god, that'd be a laugh! And then I'd be getting on a plane

I wonder if the drugs came from one of those "strychnine on acid/mushrooms" urban legend people? "Oi Terry lets mix some fuckin strychnine in these caps and make em trip fuckken balls" Hopefully nothing fucking stupid to that extent. Down here in Tassie a while ago someone was crushing their anti-psychs and putting them in caps, he got rid of a fair few (and for some reason had repeat business) until he was told very heavily (made) to stop.

The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me

Six people who took a mystery drug in Darwin's nightclub district last night were rushed to hospital, including one man who needed to be held down by six hospital workers for two hours, say police.

The club-goers were at several nightspots - Uncle Sam's, Duck's Nuts, Monsoons and Jack's Bar on Mitchell Street - when they began feeling sick after taking a capsule containing a powerful but unknown substance.

Royal Darwin Hospital spokeswoman Casey Brunt said the revellers were in a "highly agitated" state when they arrived at the emergency department.

"Six people presented to our emergency department and four of them have now been discharged," she said.

"But we have two men, 19 and 21, who remain in intensive care. They are in a serious but stable condition."

The Age understands one of the men was so aggressive he needed to be held down by six hospital staff members for two hours before he was brought under control.

A 23-year-old female and three males aged - 23, 26 and 33 - were admitted to emergency and later discharged.

“One of our main concerns is that contaminated pills have been further distributed in to the wider community,” Detective Superintendent Matt Hollamby said.

Police urged people who are in possession of an illicit drug, ‘‘particularly in tablet, capsule or powder form, not to take them and hand them in to police’’.

NT Police said they started receiving reports ‘‘of people collapsing and acting in an erratic and irrational manner from about 7pm’’.

Ms Brunt said the NT Police had a sample of the drug and the forensics department was conducting tests.

It is also understood the number of people affected may be much higher than six.

A spokeswoman for St John Ambulance Northern Territory said she was investigating reports a large number of party-goers took themselves to hospital for treatment but were not admitted.

She said the total number of victims may exceed 30.

It is believed police are investigating reports the drug might have been distributed at a party held in a city apartment earlier in the night.

If he was aggressive like that, would probably suggest some sort of stimulant. And those caps are pretty packed full of powder. Maybe some random cathinone analogue?

I have to admit it was nice of them to post photos. You don't see that very frequently when adulterated pills are seized.... now if only we could see the test results too?

great post, ya never hear much bout stimulants in darwin (well i personally dont) very interested... beats my knowladge, very curious too know

Why weren't they strapped down? I find it very hard to believe that 6 hospital staff held a patient down for 2 hours.

Thanks for posting the story hoptis. I assumed correctly that as they released the photo the cops would have already done their raids.

Why some people take capsules to this day is beyond me especially if its contains something unknown. Really curious whats in em tho.

How many dodgy dealers are now filling clear caps with white powder to pass off as the "drugs that were on the news"?

I have seen it happen before.

Just saw this on ABC news..

It was Dimethocaine in those capsules

Was it tested dimethocaine, or was it what people were told it was? After the whole NRG-1 and crap like that being tested you never know unless you've got a reputable supplier. A dimethocaine sample from those tests came up as caffeine + benzocaine from memory.
And was any mention of the cuts?
