Poppy straw (the leftover plant material of the poppy, ranging from seeds, stems, heads, flowers, etc) has been used for what, 6000 years?
The problem isn't the article, it is the assholes who run this shop and sell drugs willingly and knowingly in an obscenely obvious way to teenagers.
This is why drugs that are not controlled or who aren't having their status enforced get to be controlled and have their status enforced. These guys in this 'meat shop' are obviously very poor and uneducated, trying to make a quick dollar. The problem is they have done what white skinned bourgois Westerners hate the most: they've come into the community, run an illegitimate business in town, sell drugs, sell drugs to kids.
I like what Burroughs said on the subject in Junky, when the first wave of 'Save our children from narcotics peddlers!' propaganda hit:
"who would want kids for customers anyway? They never have any money, they tell their parents everything and will spill under questioning without even being asked to"
I think some creative writing, revisionist history/pseudo-anthropology and political correctness could save poppy straw from having its Schedule II status enforced: Religious sacrament. Old religious cults of yesteryear did use the poppy as a sacrament (some say Opium cults used to exist). Proving the existance of an ancient religion that uses the poppy as a sacrament in rituals, claiming to be of that religion, and getting a pro bono ACLU/other nonprofit attorney to fight for you like the Native American Church and Peyote, the Brazilian/Amazonian DMT cult, could probably result in an exception to the law being made in the case of members of that group. After all, the poppy is a plant with scheduled drugs in it, like Peyote and Mimosa Hostilis/Zebra grass/etc, why not give the Opium cult an excemption under the law as well?
Good god damn point. Insightful as always Tchort.
