Natural tolerance is definitely a valid phenomenon, but is not the norm, so first timers should always start on the lowest prescribed dosage, ex: 0.25mg for Xanax or 5-10mg for Vicodin/Norco. Taking 27x30 flurazepam (Dalmane) is dangerous for a first timer, and it is not a recreational benzo since it is only a partial agonist at the BZD receptor, the only non-full agonist BZD prescribed in the US, as far as I know.
I think that naturally anxious people, whose "pure" anxiety disorder is based on lower GABA transmission rather than with excess DA as is the case with schizophrenia, psychosis, and bipolar (also NE and 5-HT), that these GABA-transmission deficient people will get a much better result when using benzos at therapeutic doses, versus the schizophrenic person taking bars of Xanax to relax when all they really need is to stop abusing recreational drugs that increase DA, or start using neuroleptics to decrease excessive DA as needed.
Basically, if you are schizophrenic, bipolar, or psychotic, look in to other medications that deal with non-GABA allosoteric modulation before jumping right in to benzos, as they might not be treating the true neurochemical source of your anxiety, and just masking it through high doses of benzos by making you too fucked up to notice non-GABA-related anxiety.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is just a quick hypothesis.
