Do they really believe this? Or do they only believe in it because they have put so much time and money into finding out the story to the religion that there is no point in going back?

Im so confused if they really believe in this, how can you believe in this? It seems like scientology really is some kind of scam for money?

Well, it's probably a scam at highest levels, but tom cruise and john travolta aren't trying to make money scamming people, so I assume they believe it. Also, Herbie Hancock is too cool to scam anyone, he must believe as well.

Introductory scientology is usually about going through series of mental drills for the purpose of clearing off various purported problems and thereby (in theory) increasing happiness and gaining various skills.

The xenu stuff and related ideas are "restricted" to high level scientologists who have paid huge fees or donated gobs of money. I don't have any exact figures but I would bet scientologists who have done the OT4 and above are less tha a couple percent of scientologists--really hard to tell though as who is OT4 is secret and membership numbers for scientologists are a matter of continuous dispute.

^ and, in turn, real science is more believable than the scientology rap.

Also, Jesus never asked for your money, only your soul :)

Having known scientologists, I believe the vast majority of scientologists are either unaware of the high level Xenu stuff, or unwilling to learn about it, as you are not supposed to talk about it really, unless you are at that level, as far as I know. A buddy of mine was a Scientologist for many years, and he swore up and down that Somethingawful.com invented Xenu. Take that as you will.

I actually met this guy! In the Adams County Jail! Imagine That! I was in the jail due to a DUI conviction. His murder trial is coming up any day now. Even after he was shot through the head, he played a damn good game of chess! He beat most of the boys on the floor. Seriously, he was good! I never had a real talk with him, but we lived together for almost 3 months!!

its more believable than all that jesus shite.

I disagree! Scientology was written by a famous science fiction writer, the bibile, although i believe it to also be fiction, could be the biggest misinterpretation of a story ever ;)

I dunno about that, the old collection plate used to be passed around pretty frequently when i was a kid and went to church.

And my soul ain't for sale.

I think this is it. IN the EARLY years of scientology, the story of Xenu was kept a secret only to very high ranking members. In turn, making the low level people curious, and donate or buy their way up so they can finally hear the story. And people that arent in it, are so curious about it that they do the same thing.

and now that the real belief is uncovered, and its so outrageous that people think everyone in it is crazy and dont fall for it.

Also why did Issac Hayes "chef" become a scientologist too? And why the hell would he leave south park for making for of scientology WHEN the show made fun of every other possible religion and person and everything in existance. thats fucked up

Apparently, the core tenets of Scientology, i.e. how you're supposed to live your life daily, morality, et cetera, are halfways decent. My friend, who is now an ex-Scientologist, still loves the basic rules and "commandments" (can't think of another word for it) that Scientology lays out for you. L. Ron Hubbard apparently borrowed a lot from Buddhism, so it ends up being a pretty humble way to live one's life.

Basically, my friend has become a sort of secular Scientologist, in that he keeps the basic, low-level philosophies behind it all, and has completely dropped out of the corrupt, money-grubbing machine that is the Church of Scientology. Clearly, the Church is insane. According to my friend, the basics behind Scientology are not, and they have been warped by the bureaucracy into something Hubbard never intended.

I still don't know where I stand on the matter. It's still nice hearing his point of view on things. I mean, I lived with his family for eight plus months. His family until recently were all Scientologists. I heard it all during the eight months. They are as normal as you and I. They dislike the Church as much as most people, but I think they still find the basic philosophies valid. They could care less about all the science fiction nonsense. I mean, I'm no Scientologist, and they never tried to convert me. But I found it fascinating to hear their story.

For those interested: they dropped out recently because a relative of theirs was seen at an Anonymous rally against the Church, and thus they were all labeled Suppressive Persons, i.e. they were exiled. Several of my friend's buddies in the Church no longer talk to him. It's kind of a sick microsociety where people can turn on you in no time, "de-friend" you, and never speak to you again, no matter how much of a history you have with them. It's sick and twisted. It is, indeed, a cult.

But, again, some of the philosophies in Scientology are, apparently, a-okay; I mean, if Hubbard modeled a lot of it after Buddhism, it can't be that bad. Buddhism is pretty solid logic. What I'm trying to say is that Scientology isn't complete gibberish. A lot of it is, but the basic stuff, having been borrowed from other religions, is halfways decent, according to my inside source.

I am under the impression that scientology often goes after high profile actors and pop stars etc for the publicity.

It would not surprised me if scientologists deliberately targeted 'chef' after southpark did all those scientology joke episodes in order to get back at the southpark people.

I heard they have seperate luxury facilities for indoctrinating the rich and famous.

The mad thing, is if only people had listened to L Ron back in the 50's. He stated that pulp sci-fi was no way to make a living. Anyone with any brains would invent a religion.......

I read "Dianetics", and a lot of it makes some sense -- sort of a cross between Buddhism and psychotherapy. The Xenu stuff sounds like Hubbard's fiction, though. Wonder if he ever wrote a sci-fi story about it?

Fixed ;)

And in turn, arguments for Phenomenalism undermine the whole science rap. While a scientist might state that something exists because we can observe and measure it, a phenomenalist might state that we can't prove anything actually exists outside of our senses!

Just thought I'd throw that in there. ;)

^ We can build machines that converts information we can't sense into information we can..

Radiation, magnetic fields, infra red light, radio waves, etc, etc, etc..
