Do people who actually have ADD NOT get a high from Adderall or Ritalin?

um, not everyone gets prescribed medication to get high friend. When I was put on ritalin, and eventually adderall I never once felt "high" from it. They don't just slap you on a bunch of stimulants and send you on your way, esp. in adolescents.

When I was put on it, at the age of fourteen, I was originally put on Ritalin. My first dose they put me on was 5mg IR. After a few weeks they slowly increased the dose. The first time I took it, I remember just being able to think more clearly, and was more attentive in school. Which was perfect considering I had pretty bad ADD ( or ADHD, ADD is no longer a term currently used in the psychiatry profession, its now generalized as ADHD). Eventually I was up to 20mg. I had reached this dose in a four month period. When I was sixteen I was put on Adderall. At the time I was on 20mg IR of Ritalin. They transferred me to 10mg IR of Adderall. Over an eight month period I had reached 25mg IR of Adderall ( one 20mg IR tablet and one 5mg IR tablet) . I was taking 20mg IR in the morning before school, and a 5mg IR tablet 20 minutes before lunch at school. I felt an increased ability to think clearly, and was more attentive. I didn't and still don't consider that a "high".

* I was taking the medication alongside psychotherapy. Eventually my psychiatrist and I worked on different learning techniques, and I am no longer in need of any kind of medication to assist my ADHD. I am still in psychotherapy, but for other issues I am currently dealing with.

I've been prescribed Adderall since the 8th grade, and the only "high" I ever got off of it was the ability to stay awake longer and focus more intensely. I wouldn't say it was a feeling that could be considered recreational.

With that said, I am a strong believer that ADHD medication is over-prescribed, and it should probably be more strictly regulated. Just about any high school kid can walk into a psych office and get it. In my opinion, this contributes to a lot of the drug's abuse. Not to mention the parents pushing it to try and get their kids to take school seriously.

It's a useful drug when properly prescribed, but in my opinion there's far too many kids on the street with scripts.

I took adderall once. I took i think around 20mg in a couple hours and it didn't do much for me. All that happened was I stayed up ALL NIGHT reading a book. (and i have never been diagnosed with ADD) Im not sure whether this is normal or not, because it seems most people get an actual noticeable high. I didn't really feel any different.

^ A lot of doctors are trying to trying to get people on Strattera (sp) and newer non-stimulant or XR medications. I went to a different psych a couple weeks ago wanting to get back on Dexedrine or Adderall ( I was on 30mg of Dexedrine toward the end of highschool, forgot to include that) and they say they didn't really like giving out the IR medications anymore, and that maybe I would like to consider some of the newer medications out there. Unfortunately for me, I can't take extended release stimulant medications. I experience too many unwanted side effects, and it simply lasts too long. I would rather take my medication in the morning, and if needed, redose in the afternoon.

It sucks, because I'm going back to school in the fall, and I'm also starting work, so this medication is very benefiting to me to be able to function at work and school. Without it I'm all over the place psychologically and really can't perform as well. All I want is 5mg IR Dexedrine in the morning, and possibly 5mg IR in the afternoon. I really can't take any form of methlyphenidiate (sp) formulations, as it's too stimulating and the side effects are VERY unpleasant. I can take Adderall, but still experience some side effects. I would rather be on Dexedrine, though I still experience side effects even on that, its to a lesser extent than the Adderall. I truly think its other people seeking out ADHD stimulant medications these days that makes doctors unwilling to prescribe like they used to. A couple of years ago I would NEVER had had these problems.

jekyll and hyde, ya know

hmm, ritalin is a strange drug. i was prescribed it in college, and when taken orally, it did wonders for me. it was not speedy whatsoever. it totally slowed me down, and i would be able to get really deep into conversations, studies, notetaking, etc. my thought process just seemed to be so much more productive. and it really does vary from person to person, bc i let my roommate, at the time, take a pill, and he was all over the place, speedy, not able to concentrate, just totally hated it.

so fast forward to when i discovered you could smash ritalin up into a powder, sniff it, and get really high off of it. much speedier! very euphoric. one of the reasons i never cared to much for coke, was that ritalin smashed it out of the ballpark. its very strange how when taken orally, it calmed me down and helped me focus. yet when crushed and snorted its the exact opposite! it seemed to give me ADD!

ritalin is a very addictive cocaine-like drug when used improperly, but a wonder drug as far as focus goes when used properly.

i still wish i had some of these lying around %)

the answer is yes of course they can get high, given a sufficient dosage. if you drink alcohol, you get drunk. if you smoke pot, you get high. if you take oxys, youll get high. same deal here. what scares me is that no one actually attempted to give the answer, they just relayed stories about how they are legitimately suffering, etc. how pathetic.

BALLIINNNNNN

i don't know about ritalin. 20mg adderall just makes me feel calm and balanced so i can focus, which isn't the case when i'm sober..40mg would make me high, but i'd still be highly functional - much moreso than usual. as of now, i'm prescribed 40mg vyvanse daily and in two weeks that will be 60mg daily. the first few days of the new script make me a bit more wired and euphoric than usual, but after that my body adjusts to it and it wears off faster. so yea, the amphetamine makes me high...but the main effects are increased stamina and focus ability rather than euphoria. if you want all that euphoria and feel fucked up you gotta do meth, mdma, etc..or do a significant amount of amphetamine i guess...which usually isn't safe without tolerance...but as far as recreational value goes, amphetamine doesn't even come close to the others.
hope that helps

I think purelife is right on- there are people who need it who don't get high when taking as prescribed and it is/was overprescribed so there is lots floating around out there for lots of kids to get high off of.

Jimjones is right too- you take enough you'll get that speedy high. Calling people pathetic for explaining their situation and responding to the question was unnecessary flaming and NOT ballin.

If you have ADHD the Ritalin "high" is similar to smoking weed in my experience. My thoughts will slow down to a reasonable pace and I am able to relax and focus on one thought at a time instead of having the usual racing thought pattern typical for people with ADHD. Being able to relax is a high on its own really for me, just my experience. :)

Same goes for anxiolytic Benzodiazepines really. If you suffer from anxiety you will get much more out of them than someone without an anxiety disorder. This is often confused with getting high, but it is a very subtle feeling allowing people to simply feel normal on them.

Just my two cents. :)

Peace o/

You take enough it will fuck you up.. ADHD or not. You have ADHD and snort 100mg your still going to be pretty messed up. You wont at theraputic doses but il be my bottom dollar if you did that line youd end up like a squirrel on coke.

I have ADHD and the only difference I notice when I take any kind of speed with other people is that they all get hyper and I get mellow :) . But I do get high all the way.

Back in highschool there was a period of 2 maybe 3 months that I would snort ritalins basically every day at school. My friend was prescribed a ridiculous amount and didn't like taking it, built up a ridiculous stockpile.
I taught him the wonders of railing it and was raling anywhere from 60mg to sometimes 200mg of it a day at school. The guy who was giving them to me (for free i might add ;)) suffered severe ADHD, he seemed to get slightly less high than me at the exact same dose, obviously tolerance was a factor in that but he still definately got high.

It's not that we don't feel a shift in consciousness or feel stimulated in certain ways, it's just entirely different. It's not like a bouncing off the walls euphoria type of thing, and it's generally only enjoyable because of what can be accomplished while under the effects—not some kind of euphoria inherent in the effects themselves.

Though, at extreme doses I feel I can start to see what normal people see and enjoy in stimulants, but by the time that dosage level is achieved the physical side effects of the drug are unbearable considering the mild level of euphoria.

Kids who have adhd not getting effects from meds is a common misconception. My docter told me that when child has adhd their minds just moves way too fast. There for they act out and dont know how to deal with it. Giving them a stim. simply brings their body up to speed with their mind balancing them out. If they snort it, they will get them same feeling(mabey to a lesser extent) as one else. I know this because I have adhd and do enjoy snorting my adderall from time to time.

i was prescribed ritalin and use to get high all the time from it, i use to crush it up and snort it like cocaine, the high is similar to cocaine and also it helps you concentrate it hits you and starts working right away when you snort it, try it out and report back, i think you will be plesantly suprised and feel pretty damn good.:)

ADHD is a joke. Hell its not even real, just an excuse to give out stimulants which by the way in moderation (as with anything) can have a real benefit on ANYONE's life. People with "ADHD" are just normally high energy people. As if you can compare a "normal" brain to an "ADHD" brain and say see this difference here (due to natural variation in the genetic code) well that's a chemical imbalance and therefore this brain is not healthy.

By the way I was diagnosed with "ADHD" when I was a kid, put on ritalin.....took it as directed and ended up with stimulant psychosis.............fucking pill pushing quack.

i have add and i can get high off my meds. if i take them as prescribed, im calm, focused and somewhat productive. when i binge on them, i get spun. it takes more to get me going (bc reg doses calm me) but it is definately possible.
