I've come to like a bit of hair. Not talking 70's porn bush by any means; that I don't like on women or on men. I trim my pubes, I think its just courteous. I think back in college (80's) it was more of a "if she shaves, then that means she wants to have sex". Back then while there were plenty of sluts, most guys weren't convinced girls liked sex. We thought they did it to keep a guy. In fact I had one GF who told me that girls give sex to get love and guys give love to get sex. So when a girl did anything that indicated she had put some pre-planning into sex it was a huge turn on.

Hairy pussy stands shoulder to shoulder with its close relatives, hairy armpits, hairy arsecrack, hairy legs and hairy nostrils and is no less undesirable than any of its brethren. That wasn't how it was in the 80's. Girls would have sex, but it seemed it was always the guy who initiated it. So more of something the girl needed to do to keep the guy. Things are so much more free and open now.

We didn't so much "evolve pubic hair" as we evolved away from completely furry bodies. I've read that hairy crotches and armpits remained because the hair acted to reduce friction/chafing, but now we have creams, lotions, powders, and silky underwear to serve that purpose. Adolescent development of breasts, menstrual periods, deeper male voices etc.. are enough to demonstrate reproductive readiness. I keep my unit shaved bare in order to do my part to promote the extinction of the pubic louse through loss of its native habitat...
 
You could say we retained the hair on our junk and pits then. And it's all about the stink. You have sweat glands in those two areas, alone, that just pump out bacteria chow, so it can be fermented into high school locker-room funk. In what sense does natural selection care about chafing? Not really a selective pressure because why do we have teeth still and not laser beams and mirrored cheeks to ionise our foods?

Like swilow said, a big part of the switch is due to expectations set by porn. I'm saying that porn is a big part of the reason you are unattracted to public hair. I don't think it's natural that our culture suddenly started thinking it was gross in a relative short period of time. We wouldn't find something that's always been a part of the body and the sex organs unattractive unless a cultural norm biased us against it. So in that alternate reality of today, where it wasn't a cultural norm, you wouldn't be repelled by it in the first place. So in this case, you win because you're happy with it, she wins because she doesn't want to shave or feel compelled to shave. Or maybe you guys are like, hmm, this would be hot, and then you'd shave it, and everybody wins there too. You talk like all this is unfair for women, while men have to shave the hair around our dick too. And it's not that much of a big deal. The itch and what else isn't that much to handle.

Chafing leads to soreness, rawness, possibly infection... I don't think it's a coincidence that these hairs persist mainly in the places where our limbs join our torsos... but it's still just somebody's hypothesis that I read somewhere.

That's not the reason they have women shave in porn. They do it so the viewer can see "everything" as clearly and uncluttered as possible. You can like or dislike hair down there (I happen to prefer it) but porn has come to the conclusion that its better to present their product as clearly as possible for maximum viewing pleasure.
