(not sure if right forum, the post may be a bit chaotic and my english is a bit weird at times, sorry ;p)

Been talking to doctor google for days and seems like I'm textbook schizotypal ;/ although hopefully mild

Seeing my GP on wednesday, this is a list of symptoms+notes I made:

- can't form a new relationship - my interpersonal skills are fail; I've few friends left and I just recently realized I haven't really made any new ones since high school that I'm still in contact with (i'm 31); I did meet some really great people during last few years, but I feel so out of sync with everybody I simply withdraw from social contact and slowly disappear from people's lives

- "Incorrect interpretations of events. Individuals with schizotypal personality disorder often have difficulty seeing the correct cause and effect of situations and how they affect others. For instance, the schizotypal may misread a simple non-verbal communication cue, such as a frown, as someone being displeased with them, when in reality it may have nothing to do with them." ---> this happens all the time, one innocent gesture from someone can set off a train of paranoid thoughts in my head

- social anxiety - I can interact with people when necessary but I generally avoid it; knowing people better doesn't seem to help much, I'm still anxious/akward talking to them; it is a little better when there's just me and them, but as long as there's anyone around - no way

- ruminating - replaying some old arguments with people (or even making them up), thinking about unpleasant events from the past that have no bearing on any current events in my life - it happens a lot and all it does is make me angry (at basically nothing) with clenched fist/jaw and shit

- i can't have an ongoing conversation with ANYBODY but my closest friends, i get 'bored' and uncomfortable after a couple of minutes tops.

- i am generally considered a weird-ass (i actually believe this is good, but not when you are a nutcase at the same time ;p)

- i drift from one aimless activity to another

symptoms i've seen mentioned that I might not be having:

- weird clothes - this is mentioned everywhere, not sure about this one; i like fancy colors (red, bright blue/yellow) and I like mixing styles so maybe i do dress peculiar? dunno

- odd beliefs or magical thinking - not sure here either; i do sometimes have this feeling that a mysterious force is responsible for an event (especially on MXE ;p) but I am not really pre-occupied with anything supernatural

I also suffer from some depression/general anxiety symptoms (which according to google, is not uncommon in schizotypals):

anxiety
irritability (really bad)
apathy, fatigue->lack of concentration (same)
decreased level of activity
guilt
nausea (EVERY morning)
early waking (EVERY morning)
insomnia (major, I sleep well one night a week tops)
suicidal thoughts (every so often, i shake'em quickly though)
excessive sweating (for no reason)

So what do you think? If you have schizotypal personality disorder please reveal yourself ;p anything you can share/add/comment on is appreciated.

thanx

Your GP will probably refer you to a counselor, psychologist, or even psychiatrist.

You may have it, or you may not and just have depression, or anxiety. People can't really diagnose you online.

impossible to diagnose online. sorry, but you will have to be patient and see what the pros say.

If you read about psychological disorders online, you're sure to convince yourself that you have them all... Go see a doctor and a psychiatrist, but do yourself a favor: exercise, give up drugs, eat right, establish some goals, and get back to us regarding the improvement of your mental and physical health.

Best of luck!

You can't go by what the google doc said. It's good that you're going to see a real life doctor who can properly diagnose or refer you to a specialist.
You may need extensive testing and talks with a doctor because it may be something else. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may help along with medication. Don't let a diagnosis define who you are. Wish you the best.

Er yeah, please don't try to diagnose yourself online - that's surely one way to make you feel even more concerned!

As what has been said already, go and speak to a professional. :)

Meh. If you've got schizotypal personality disorder I probably have it too...which I doubt and which I feel one of my numerous psychiatrists would have probably spotted. Google isn't your friend when it comes to diagnosing yourself, you'll look up your cough causes and end up thinking you're dying of cancer when you just got a cold. Talk to your GP about it and you might be referred to a psychiatrist but it might 'just' be depression, there's plenty of less 'dramatic' explanations for the kind of behavior you describe.

alrighty, seems like i did freak out a little. GP said schizotypal is possible but more likely it's just a general depression/anxiety thing. she'll send me for psychiatric evaluation...

good luck with the eval. Dont let her talking you into something you dont have.....

Psychiatrists have a tenancy of trying to prove they are as good as a doctor, and they'll prescribe you something for anything..like this

i had drug induced psychosis a little ways back, and i had to go for a psyc eval at the hospital, and he tried to prescribe me adderall for adhd.....What?
i told him i heard voices and was seeing shit and he goes uhhh you might have adhd. i dont think so...

just be careful, and good luck

The thing with psychological disorders and self diagnoses is that most people will see themselves in whatever disorder they read.. i myself have a lot of those traits.. but then i have a lot of traits of other disorders too.. and i don't believe i have any of them (to any doctor needed degree)..

And the fact you don't fill a lot of the bill leads me to think no.. you don't have schizotypal disorder..

My advice would be to ask a doctor.. and even then know they are known for misdiagnosing psychological disorders (even psychiatrists / pschologists do it).. Like Opium has just said.. sometimes they don't know what they're talking about.

Schizotypal is truly unique in its presentation. In college, my first roommate decided to forego taking the antibiotics he had been prescribed for Lyme disease so that he could take LSD at several festivals one summer (the logic behind which I truly have yet to understand). The disease spread to his brain, and he developed Schizotypal Personality Disorder. Whilst the symptoms you describe may very well be severe enough such that some type of psychiatric intervention might lesson/remove the symptoms, you definitely do not appear to have SPD.

None of the above is meant to substitute for the advice of a psychologist, psychiatrist or neurologist.
