Do drugs do more Harm or Good to culture?

^^

I actually think the majority of people use responsibly. Not everyone broadcasts their uses and a lot of people use secretly. There are tons and tons of drug users who maintain healthy and funcional lifestyles.

Legality is a big part of the problem. Not to many people get shot of a case of beer or a carton of cigarettes.

Looking back on all the generations that have used and abused drugs (including this one), and all the cultures that have formed around these drugs, is more harm or good done? Explain.

do you even understand the question yourself? i really don't want to respond to someone who can't even define the question they're asking, because it's very fucking unclear 8o

Why would i ask the question if i dont understand it myself? Others dont seem to have a hard time answering the question. It's actually very simple. If you want to know what i mean by harming culture i mean by the movements these cultures represent. Many times cultures are dirven by substances and many times the substances they are driven by hurt the culture themselves.

Ok I thought I understood your question before, now you've completely confused me....

If you're having difficulty understanding the question why do you waste your time responding? Why do you waste my time trying to clear up a simple question for you? If you don't understand it i'm sorry there's nothing I can do to help you.

I'm just trying to understand here, instead of speaking about an entire race of people, you are talking about a specific group such a "rock culture" for example??

I think this is where people are getting hung up, the example you gave before is what is eluding me to think this way.

Well what do you mean cutures driven by substances? If a cuture is driven by a substance, that is not a healthy culture. Substances can however aid in a cuture's positive drive.

Ok ill give an example based on my own beliefs.

Recently watching and reading alot about the cultures of the 60's in U.S.A. i gathered that those cultures were harmed by the intake of drugs. Had they not so heavily revolved around the use of drugs (in particular LSD) they may have had a more positive impact on the state of todays government. In general people believe excess leads to the palace of wisdom but in many cases people don't know when to stop once they have reached that place of wisdom. We see examples such as Jim Morrison, and Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrison in particular could have had a great impact on society would he have known when to stop. Then altamont and Charles Manson happened, government propaganda ensued relating the use of drugs to the deaths of many bringing the revolution of the 60's to a screeching halt and reverse.

I believe drugs can start the spark a culture needs to reform the state of a corrupt government which leads to a good change but excess leads to harm and basically resets any changes that might have taken place. Therefore I believe drugs can do more harm than good to a culture. Especially a cultures uprising to change the current status of its controlling government.

This is just one example. I'm trying to find out what other examples people have gathered about drugs effecting culture in positive or negative ways.

more good than harm

civil rights and other much needed societal changes that happened in the 60s and afterward were fueled by new states of mind induced by psychedelics

also, ...music and other forms of art. duh

the most harmful drug to society, imo, is alcohol. it's the ONLY commonly used recreational drug which commonly causes aggression and violence

People who do them dont really impact anything, they just kinda space out behind dumpsters and shit. Wikipedia says it popular with homeless young people. Seems to me they take the impact out of society. Psychedelics tho, when not used to excess have helped people come up with new ideas.. And what about rx drugs, don't then help people positivley enhance society? Most anti-depressents have a similar effect as psychedelics on the same parts of the brain, they just take days and weeks to do it. As a result the positive effects on society are muted and slower, but its definitly positive most of the time. Sure some people may take massive doses every day, and just become everhappy lumps of laziness, but not most people. The same is true with psychedelics and other drugs too, its because they're illegal, that more people overuse them, thinking how "fucked up" they can be while "fighting the system" or whatever

Drugs all have there good points and like anything have there bad points.
Like being an over protective mother, or eating too much. < These examples also effect culture as does everything we do. Drugs to me improve my life and culture. It depends on your opinion as nothing is fact.

Burger King has probably killed more people than drugs this last year.

Phrases such as this make pro-drug advocates look less intelligent.

You need to get the percentage of death for each population (Burger King users, Drug Users) and than compare. More people use Burger Kind thus more people will die from it. Plus, I would make it fast food users in general or single out a specific drug.

^^ Yes, it is a rediculus statement. Burger King doesn't actually kill people. It will however, make you fat, and being fat is far unhealtier than using drugs. But nonetheless, it doesn't matter, since the food production industry lobbies congress (ie. bribes) to keep drugs illegal. This works good for a lot of drug dealers who keep cover jobs working for, wherelse, Burger King...

depends on the cultures state of mind, and which drugs we're talking about. urban/hip-hop culture IMO was completely ruined by the introduction of crack on their society.

however, the hippies were greatly influenced for the better by their use of LSD. they just let it get out of control, like someone said earlier.

so I think it depends on the situation whether drugs will help or harm. overall in the history of drugs sadly I think they've done more harm to people than good. the good is very good, but the bad is very, very bad.
