Bupe Do doctors share information? (I don't want my GP to know I'm on suboxone.)

Hello all,

I have been a reader of bluelight for awhile, but never a poster. Thank you to all who have made this community.

I have been doing heroin for roughly a year now, for the past week or so I've been taking 4mg of subs (bought off the street). Sadly, my sub source has been arrested. I must now find a suboxone doctor.

My current doctor, who I've been going to for over 20 years, can prescribe suboxone (I foundout on his website), but I don't want to ask him to. He has no idea I have been on opiates and I don't want him to. He has been my doctor since I was a child and is a friend of the family. I know patient-doctor confidentiality and all, but I don't want to bring it up. He prescribes me 2mg of xanax each day due to anxiety, which I legitimately have, and I am afraid if I tell him I've been doing heroin, he will stop my xanax script, in fear that I would (or have been) abusing them; though I've not.

I've found a doctor in my area that prescribes subs and I am thinking about going to him tomorrow/today. My question is, will my family doctor findout I've been prescribed to subs if this new doc gives me them? Will my new doc tell my family doc 'hey I gave your patient suboxone, etc. etc'. Or, will the fact that I've been prescribed subs by a different doctor show up on my family doctor's records when I go in for my monthly checkup? I apologize if this doesn't make much sense, I'm a horrible writer, but hopefully you get the point.

TL;DR, will my family doctor findout another doctor prescribed me subs?

It depends on the laws and policies in your location.

In most developed countries there is no way a doctor can legally say anything to anyone about your health unless they feel you are a danger to yourself or others, or they are ordered to by the court.

If they do find out that you are trying to scam the system (often via insurance company records, pharmacies checks, or blood test) then they can make a note in your files with them and if new doctors request their files on you it will be there.

That being said I don't believe going to separate suboxone clinic/doctor without telling your GP is that big a deal (don't quote me on that) so long as they aren't prescribing you any narcotics, nor anything for the same condition. Regardless I think the simplest thing would be to find a new GP as it seems you aren't happy with the relationship you have with him now, and if you can't be honest with him he can't treat you properly.
 
I have a very open and honest relationship with my GP, but I am afraid I will lose my xanax script, which helps me sleep at night. He's a very smart and nice guy, but I can see him thinking, if I got hooked on dope, I probably got hooked on the xanax he's been giving me, since xanax is highly addictive and has a high potential for abuse. I just don't want to risk it. Thanks for the reply. I'm in Pennsylvania.
 
Depends. my sub doctors have always been private, meaning I pay them cash and dont use insurance bc most take take insurance. So, basically, any other doctor in my insurance group has no idea i'm have been on subs.

Call up so addiction psychiatrists and see how much they cost if you dont have insurance or they don't accept it.
 
At the very least he can find out you are seeing another doctor if you pay the Suboxone doctor through your insurance.

If you don't use your insurance to see the Suboxone doctor, you should be fine.

However, this is not within the scope of Other Drugs so I'm going to close this. The bottom line is if your first doctor can prescribe it to you, I'd try for that. Many Suboxone doctors have prescribed benzos concurrently with Suboxone; if he's already prescribing you Xanax, I don't see why he wouldn't give you any more as he has already started.
 
C.H is right that this isn't appropriate for OD but for more information, look into the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) - here are some basics on privacy stipulations.

Basically, you need to consent to have information sent between physicians and there isn't a central database or anything that all doctors can access that stores your information.

Your current doctor probably won't start drug testing you so you might be able to get the bupe past him, but the bupe doctor probably will UA you so he'll find out about the xanax if you're currently using it and may want you to stop and/or contact your current doctor to discuss this.

I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but if you really want to get away from problematic drug use and such, you need to be open and honest with the people in a position to help you.
