Date: May 15th, 2011
Time: 8:00pm-10:00pm
Drug: N,N-DMT Freebase and Salvia Divinorum 20x Extract
Dose: 35mg and 35mg
I began the day by pulling a shot glass out of my freezer that contained the results of a recrystallization on a little over a gram of yellowed DMT crystals, the result of recycling naphtha. The clean-up yielded about 800mg of pure white spice shards - mmm, tasty. A friend had been asking me lately about getting acquainted with lady DMT. He had no previous psychedelic experience besides cannabis, and he seemed somewhat ill informed, but I could feel that his intention was pure and correct. We talked for a while. I answered his questions and allayed his fears of physical harm. I described the experience qualitatively as best I could and discussed its advantages and disadvantages when compared to other substances that might be considered potential entryways to the vast world of psychedelics. Though some think DMT is for the seasoned tripper only, I tend to disagree largely because of its convenient duration. A relatively low-dosed DMT trip can be a nice toe-dip for a first time tripper into the type of world they can expect to find behind these doors, and if they find that world to be not to their liking then they will shortly be back home.
But this is not about my friend, this is about me and the incredible discovery I haphazardly made this fateful night. Three of us had gathered to share the freshly forged spirit molecule, and we had gone around the circle with the standard 35mg of crystal on steel wool. It was familiar fare for myself and one of the friends, and the curious friend's first trip went quite well and was very manageable. I was hungry for more though. We got to talking about Salvia, trying to describe it to the friend who was new to all this. Personally I find it rather hollow and abstract, like a sinister shell of the DMT experience. I had read about the DMT and Salvia combo before but I never found it appealing, mostly because I viewed it as such a juxtaposition. This hollow mean-spirited toy on one hand, this deep and beautiful tool on the other. For whatever reason amidst the discussion about it, I decided I would try it just to shake things up. I delved into my box and retrieved a dusty vial containing about 400mg of Salvia Divinorum 20x Extract. This was the same material I had written about in another trip report somewhere back in the archives of Bluelight, and I had given up on it for quite some time. Salvia is like that with me - I almost never want it but occasionally I hear its call and come wandering back into its corner of the world. I weighed out 35mg of the white shards and melted it into the top of the steel wool. I then weighed out 35mg of the Salvia flakes and poured them on top of the bowl. I figured it usually takes 80-100mg of the extract to get me fully immersed in Salvia world, so 35mg would just be enough to add some flavor and variety to the familiar DMT headspace. Plus it was cool that the numbers lined up. I made a good decision as I would come to find out.
The bowl-piece was put onto a bong that had no water in the chamber. This is how we've been smoking the DMT lately, and it is usually quite mild this way. Without hesitation I brought the flame to the pile of Salvia and it began to smolder. I held the flame on and the heat began to tickle the DMT out from within its woolen prison. The two seeped into the chamber, mingled in a sensual embrace, then formed a dagger and stabbed me right in the lungs. Ow, fuck, bleeehh. I slowly let the harsh smoke billow out of my mouth, forcefully exhaling it would've only made me cough, and I was determined to have a comfortable body upon entering the trip. I took another hit of equivalent size and pain, then set the pipe down. It seemed that the smoldering Salvia helped to coax a decent hit out of the steel wool by applying a constant stream of heat to the DMT. I didn't have much time to dwell on that thought though, because I was suddenly in the middle of something entirely new.
First I heard the familiar electric humming of the DMT, and felt the weightlessness wash over me. I began to focus on the emblem of a lotus on my computer screen, something that I had meditated upon while using DMT before. Suddenly the lotus began to twist and undulate in the familiar DMT fashion. That's a large part of what makes DMT so striking to me - you can be looking directly at something of which you know the shape very well, but it will literally change form in front of your eyes. I've only had such a profound alteration of visual reality on DMT and on higher doses of LSD. Anyway, this was all pretty familiar so far, but then suddenly the Salvia came rushing into the picture. It was subtle due to the low dose, but it was absolutely making itself be heard. Suddenly the DMT visuals took on a frenzied and expedited pace. Instead of floating through DMT space I was being propelled through it by a rocket. Fractal patterns began swirling around the lotus and a tube formed out of these shapes. The colors were very much Salvia - vivid and plastic like a carnival ride. The patterns were very much DMT - flowing fractals and vines and organic Aztec imagery. They joined forces, playing off of each other and formed perhaps the most visually intense environment I've yet to find myself in. It was like DMT on crack. Everything was moving super fast, everything was comically over-colored and the patterns were of a remarkable complexity. I heard the far off laughter of Salvia, but I knew I was far enough away from the Salvia people to ensure a relatively fearless trip, devoid of the mean tricks that Salvia tends to play on its own. Instead of the Salvia distorting the DMT into something evil and twisted, the DMT seemed to actually be showing the Salvia the way. The absolute best characteristics of each drug shone forth to create something entirely new and intriguing. The patterns that were forming around the lotus suddenly fell apart like hot wax and a prominent melting motif began. Everything I looked at seemed to melt, very similar to an LSD peak. It was beautiful. This is some stereotypical balls-to-the-wall psychedelia. And what's more the emotional state was entirely different than either drug by itself. The megalomaniacal derangement of Salvia manifested instead as a devil-may-care attitude. The flowing awe-struck state of DMT turned into glowing pure glory and empowerment. My emotional state was very clear: I was having fun. There was no second-guessing and no "I don't know about this" moments, just pure powerful fun. It was very much like being on a rollercoaster, careening through a dense land of patterns and color.
My friend was across from me coming down from his first DMT trip, and discussing the trip with my other friend. He sprawled out on the couch in the contented relaxation of a DMT afterglow, and I watched him melt in front of my eyes. I was shocked by how powerful the experience was, but I never once felt any fear or confusion. It was a beautiful and powerful rocket-ship ride from start to finish. As I began to come down I exclaimed "That was so fun!". I had nothing but good things to say about the combination, and eventually I mixed the same cocktail for each friend as well, and a second one for myself. Everybody loved it, and the second time I did it was just as exciting and powerful as the first.
I am so happy I found out how much I like this combo. Finally I have a use for this Salvia that I probably never would've used otherwise. I know that to many this combination sounds unappealing, but I'd urge you to try it yourself before passing judgement on it. The key to success is to go low with the Salvia. You don't want enough to overpower the DMT trip or provide a trip on its own, you only want enough to spice things up. For me 35mg of each is the sweet spot, though in the future I might bump that DMT dose up to 45 or 50. The Salvia seems to give me the courage to handle a more intense DMT trip that otherwise would have me a little bit shook.
Thanks for reading, happy trails!
