The following is a short account of a medium-dose DMT (& cannabis) experience that probably wasn't terribly unusual or remarkable, although very rewarding.
After tentatively trying DMT for the first time (which basically resulted in a bit of a body high and a few seconds of slight visual distortion), I decided that I'd wake up before sunrise on the following Saturday morning for my second experiment, about a week after the first. It was the only time that I was sure to be left undisturbed by my parents, whom I live with; and I had thought that the morning sunlight glowing through my windows would make for a nice setting.
I woke up to my alarm at 6 o'clock A.M., and then browsed the internet and listened to a bit of music until the darkness outside subsided, and the world was illuminated by a faint blueish light. At this point I packed my glass bowl with a smallish hunk of very potent cannabis bud, a healthy pinch of dried oregano (as extra smoking medium), and a couple scoops of DMT crystals via my Swiss army knife, each slightly larger than the average match head. I've read 10 mg of DMT described as being about the volume of a match head, and on this basis, I estimate that I packed roughly 25 mg.
I sat cross-legged on my bed, pipe in one hand, lighter in the other. I noted the time, put the pipe to my mouth, flicked the lighter, and slowly inhaled, holding the flame about an inch away from the DMT-laden bowl of vegetable matter. I slowly lowered the flame toward the bowl until I tasted sweet DMT vapor filling my mouth, and I could see a thin white smoke rolling in through the glass stem of my piece. I continued to inhale until I had vaporized all that I could with this method, and then smoked the vegetable matter in the bowl in another single large hit.
As I was holding the smoke in my lungs, I felt a faint buzzing. My body felt more fluid, pulsating gently with a continually growing organic energy. I began to exhale...
Before I knew it, I was thrown into another moment in time. The buzzing had become like some sort of electrical energy that coursed throughout me with an incredible intensity, and I heard a ringing tone becoming louder and louder, rising in pitch. Visually, things were twisting and rippling. My heart was pumping quickly, my breathing was rapid - there had definitely been a sudden release of adrenaline. Surely I must have been running, climbing, swimming... chasing someone or something, or being chased... No, it couldn't be! It came to me in a sudden revelation that I had been sitting in bed, calmly inhaling DMT, which was entirely confounding.
As the intensity of the experience continued to rise, I began to feel a bit overwhelmed by the influx of sensory perception. I took a deep breath, trying to free myself of unwanted tension. I realized that I was still holding my pipe and lighter (which were covered in sweat), so I placed them on my night table. Then, something more clear came through the blurry sensory storm - I began to hear music. A chord progression, with a deep, powerful, orchestral feel. The music mirrored my emotions; a perfect aural manifestation of the experience. I became fascinated with the music, and began to channel my energy into it - as I swayed my body to its rhythm, it became more vivid, and its emotion gripped me.
At this point, the cannabinoids kicked in, and the peaceful euphoria of the cannabis intoxication began to wash over me. Any initial anxiety had given way to the powerful emotion of this internal music, which totally consumed me. Due partly to the cannabis, without a doubt, my thoughts became much more abstract: colorful, flowing, changing imagery, dancing to the beat of the Music. The synchronicity of the aural and visual aspects of the experience, which wove together in passionate harmony, was absolutely fantastic - I didn't want to make a noise, but I couldn't help myself, and burst out in laughter. I spent the next 6 or 7 minutes in a therapeutic meditation, smiling and laughing, absorbed in a passive reception of the drugs' gifts to me of color, rhythm, joy, and the psychedelic logic that seemed to piece it all together.
I gently floated down to the soft landing of a happy stone, tryptamine vibrations melting away...
After thoughts:
Firstly, as you've probably gathered from the way I described the experience, it was mainly recreational. Although it positively affected my mood for the rest of the day, there were no life-changing revelations to speak of, as there were with other psychedelic experiences of mine. Secondly, it would seem that at this dosage level aural "hallucinations" were definitely present, mainly in the form of music (and occasionally distant babbling voices), yet almost all imagery was within the "mind's eye" - no solid hallucination. OEVs were only present during the first minute or so - although I think after that my mind was so diverted from the outside world that I didn't really consider looking for them.
Peace!
