Dr. Rick Strassman, the pioneer of modern day psychedelic research, suggested during his clinical studies of N,N-DMT in the '90s that the pineal gland in the centre of the brain produces N,N-DMT and that accidental releases of it could be the cause of people claiming to be abducted by aliens. This is because people often encounter trans-dimensional beings while under the influence of N,N-DMT. He also suggested that N,N-DMT could be responsible for dreams and death, as many people have dream-like experiences and Near Death experiences while on N,N-DMT. None of this has been proven, al though it is quite possible that N,N-DMT is produced endogenously in the human body considering its found throughout many living species, and in rather high concentrations in some plants. Someone mixed up these suggestions from Dr. Strassman and like a game of telephone, after a few people hear a story and put their spin on it to embellish the story, you end up with something like:
"Smoking DMT destroys the natural DMT you have and therefore your death won't be how its supposed to be and it could be unpleasant because you've already used up your dmt and it never comes back."
That is False. At least there is no evidence to even suggest that possibility.
This is going straight to the "Drug stories you have heard that sound like bullshit" thread

edit: DMT has been found to be produced endogenously, "in human urine, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid" (Science, 323, pg 934-947), so there is no question whether DMT is produced endogenously in the human body, but there is no proof that it is produced or is transported endogenously in the human brain. From the same Science article they suggest, "The binding, boichemical, physiological, and behavioural studies reported here all support the hypothesis that DMT acts as a ligand for the sigma-1 receptor." I don't know much about receptors, but I am under the impression that their are sigma-1 receptors in the brain, so this study may indicate further evidence that DMT is either endogenously produced in or is transported into the human brain. I have just posted a new thread in Advanced Drug Discussion asking whether or not the study provides further evidence that DMT can be found in the human brain.
