I'll keep this short, if I let myself type for more than a minute I start rambling about useless crap.

I've seen several old news threads from anywhere from one to four years old be bumped by some new person that doesn't understand that Michael Jackson died from propofol 2 years ago and just bumps it and craps up the main page. Why don't we archive/lock old news threads like every other section? It's the only section that should actually need it, but it's almost the only section without it.

Yeah this is really slight. I mean hell, if you hadn't told me the upgrade was gonna happen, I wouldn't have noticed it. Totally the same dude. Totally.

We do archive and prune threads in DiTM and will probably be getting to it within the next few months.

Even then, people may wish to save old threads and allow them to remain open for posting.

Just don't click on the thread if you're not interested...

I can't click a thread and be sure it's not from 12 years ago.. at least I couldn't before.

That is really the only section that things become completely, 100% irrelevant in after a while. For just about any other section, a post from 50 years ago is still as valid as one made 5 minutes ago.

I always liked it when somebody bumped a story from way back.

Particularly if it updates the original.

Some vBulletin forums put an auto lock on threads that haven't had a reply after a certain period of time. Not saying I'd be in favour of such a move, but it is an option if the community really feels it's a pressing issue.

Hey TM :)

We can do that now, I think it's a forum-specific setting, otherwise if it's site-wide would take some hacking to narrow down to one forum, but definitely used elsewhere.

We all have our own personal preferences... I think Best of Bluelight shouldn't allow new posts, you see these really awesome threads from years ago being bumped by someone who has nothing to add but 'LOL'.

I dunno. With BoB and forum archives, I can understand why we'd implement a restriction on new posts to maintain the quality of the thread that was archived, rather than see it being watered down with +1s.

But... the sentimental side of me thinks that allowing new posts does at least keep the threads alive, rather than being consigned to the depths of the database.

General-use forums (not the archives) shouldn't put timed auto-locks on threads unless they're absolutely clear that they would prefer people to start new threads, rather than searching and updating old ones.

Bluelight tends to prefer people to search and bump, whereas other forums go nuts if you update a thread more than six months old.

DitM has tended to merge new threads if they update something that was already posted in an older thread.

(oh, and congrats on the upgrade)

Hmmm the sushi I threw in my garbage smells very fermented, maybe I should drink whatever flows out when I tilt it.

Thank you though for hijacking my thread and making it about other sections I wasn't talking about, that was very thoughtful of you two!

The forums on boards don't exist as an island.

Your OP makes reference to 'other sections'. The posts above are an attempt to discuss the merits of locking threads, by making reference to other parts of the board and how those individual forums operate.

You should probably avoid drinking the water. Feel free to nibble at the sushi if you get peckish. You have my blessing.

^ good advice... personally my rule of thumb is to not consume anything I've placed amongst my waste but to each his own!

The Network, just wanted to note that people have been very respectful toward you throughout this thread and you've been kind of a dick at times (and I specifically mean the way you're addressing people, not the tantrum-esque behavior because the forum doesn't cater exactly to your preferences :p).

I take your point that lots of threads in DitM are needlessly and annoyingly bumped but as others have mentioned, locking these threads prevents updates on those stories and otherwise meaningful discussion that can result from being able to resurrect threads that have fallen far from the first page. I think it might be worth adding a note to their guidelines about when it's appropriate to bump old threads and make an effort to promote certain etiquette but I'm not sure banning all bumping of older threads in there is the proper way of addressing this. I don't personally oversee the forum at all though so it's up to those that do who are more familiar with it to decide if this would be a worthy endeavor.

Overall, we can't make rules to restrict every annoying behavior people around here demonstrate. As a forum, you have to give people a certain license to post as they desire within reason and unfortunately not everyone out there has your enlightened view of what's post-worthy ;)

Not all threads in DiTM are based on dated material. Also, not all discussion in threads based on dated material is worthless after a certain amount of time.

The pruning that we do in DiTM, and everywhere on this site, is based on the last post date. So, even if we pruned it down to the last 3 months, threads may still be there from a while ago.

Sorry you're not enjoying the forum, man.
