Hi All,

For years of my life I have read and written "x" and "o" at the end of letters, emails, messages and cards and I have clearly understood these to be hugs and kisses.

A 'soberly challenged' conversation in the beer garden revealed an interesting argument between friends...

Which action does each character represent (xo)?

I had always thought that the 'x' represented hugs as the cross resembled crossed hands when hugging and that the 'o' represented kisses as the 'o' was like lips.

Others believe that the 'o' represents hugs because of the shape made with your arms when hugging and that the 'x' represents kisses... well because, it just does.

Please discuss your thoughts on the true representations of 'x' and 'o'...

I never really thought about it like that...

I always saw "XOXO" as a word that meant "hugs and kisses"

There's a Wikipedia entry on hugs and kisses.

I'd never realised there was any debate over which was which?

And I thought that "x" as a kiss came first, historically speaking, whereas "o" as a hug was a relatively recent phenomenon?

I feel like a grave injustice has been performed and I have been mislead all my life.

All those times I thought I was sending and reciving hugs, could they have been more? Could they have been misleading?

Amazing how much difference one letter makes...

This is why I sign all my love letters, "I want to engage in passionate vaginal sexual intercourse with you" because there is very little debate as to what that means.

9mm... does it work out well for you? ;)

As far as I've known, x has always been kisses and o for hugs.

I don't really use xoxo, only xx to sign off on stuff to friends/partners.

She was reading it driving too school and talking to me on the phone, and she was like "Yeah, that would be awesome what about AGGRRGHHHH *CRASH*". She ran a red light not paying attention, busy talking to me when she got hit by a truck going through the green light at 70km/h.

So I guess it worked, but I never got to do it.

X X

i just wanted to leave kisses as close to up all night as possible.

on the side, it defines my opinion.
