Disaster looms as oil slick reaches US coast

"The Escambia County Health Department lifted a health advisory on Pensacola Beach on Friday on the advice of a beach official and against the advice of a federal environmental official.

So far, 400 people have sought medical care for upper or lower respiratory problems, headaches, nausea, and eye irritation after trips to Escambia County beaches, Lanza said.

..."I only went into the water up to my ankles. That's as far as I wanted to go," said Joe Chambers, 28, of West Pensacola as he scrubbed off oily residue from himself and his son, Ethan, 4, in the public showers at Casino Beach. "It doesn't smell like the beach. It smells like a gas station. There are no fish in the water. There's nothing alive in the water. I don't know how public officials can just look at the water and make a call to reopen it for swimming."

...But water samples taken Thursday in the surf zone, where most people swim, at Casino Beach, did reveal small amounts of alkanes, hydrocarbon molecules found in oil, he said."

im so fucking pissed off at BP for doing this shit. fuck you BP, fuckin gay ass british company.

i live in clearwater and it makes me so sad to know that the beach i walk on, chase chicks on, get trashed on every day is going to be ruined for years. it really breaks my heart.

plus we were just recovering from the construction and land economic crisis.. now this. give us a fuckin break. stupid brits.

BP is Literally trying to Cover Up the damage on Louisiana Beaches.

There's no question that BP has lied extensively over the past few months about the growing Gulf oil disaster. The company has bullied journalists, fudged numbers, and even deployed fake journalists to the Gulf to write about how everything is fine. Now BP may be literally trying to cover up oiled beaches by dumping sand on top of them.

The video below, filmed by Judson Parker of Save Our Shores Florida, purportedly shows oil sandwiched between two layers of different types of sand. According to Parker, local deputies confirmed that BP dumped sand onto the Grand Isle, Louisiana beach and attempted to smooth it over. But Wayne Keller, the Executive Director of the Grand Isle Port Commission, doesn't know anything about it. "I'm not aware of that being done anywhere on Grand Isle," he tells FastCompany.com. I know we're trucking in sand to build berms to keep oil out of the estuary, but that's it."

A quick tip to BP: we see what you're doing. And if this just another attempt to make the oil disaster seem trivial, it won't work.

god damn it BP

I usually speak of systemic ills, but BP's internal dynamics and the firm's relation to our polity may be somewhat 'special'.

ebola

Vuvuzela symphony planned at BP headquarters in London

That'll teach em.

Making an exception for the molotov cocktail, the vuvuzela should be every protesters go to move from here on in. It is incredibly annoying. Sound torture I love it!

re ebola

"may" be a special case?

it seems to me that they "are" a special case. BP has had way more preventable accidents/deaths and other corps take safety steps that would have prevented the disaster

Special, IMO, only inasmuch that they are both at the end capitalists and that greed for money transcends borders and organizations.

BP and American politicians are business partners first, and everything else second. "Environmentalists" is not even on the list.

The Gulf of Mexico is over. This is a generational disaster now. They have lied through their teeth about leakage rates. Images and videos are getting out and it is heartbreaking. I wish they'd just headshot the birds, they're done for, just stop them flopping around on the beach. Have some mercy at least give them opiates.

this artcle says that it will soon rival the exxon valdez spill in the 90's, thats bull, ever since day one, every four days it spits out the amount that the exxon valdez did.

actually, BP was renting that rig, and its workers from a north western european company called TransCorp. BP paid all the expenses, transcorp sent their own workers, from europe, to man the rig. They were the ones responsible for all those maintenance checks that went undone.
