Dirty highs & puffy head effect.

Some strains (of headies) produce what can be described as a 'dirty' high, 'puffy' high, or both. This effect usually comes from indica strains, especially indica-dominant hybrids IMO.

5-10 minutes after toking, I feel a heavy body high encompassing me, and things seem to be slightly in slow motion. This is the initial rush.

The initial rush is most-of-the-time pleasurable/euphoric. Then when the high achieves it's signature effect (e.g. peaks and plateaus): I am forgetful, cannot maintain a logical train of thought, throat feels heavy/parched, eyelids feel heavy, I feel like the back-side of my eyes are sinking, lethargic, and my least favorite -- my sinuses are swelled and 'puffy' like during a sinus infection/cold.. And don't get me started on the knocked-out comedown.

This dirty effect is most noted with strains including (and similar to) Kushes, Afghans, Skunks, Chemdogs (sp?), most outdoor strains--especially Northern Lights and Trainwreck, (usually strains that are also harsh on lungs).

My question: Is there a way to counteract these nasty head-effects (most importantly the sinus swelling)? Supplements, OTC drugs, etc.?

If I knew what mechanisms cause this reaction (allergy maybe?), that would help, and if you may know what family of cannibinoids/--ols is primarily responsible (I don't think it's THC because a lot of Sativa's have a smoother effect and are low in CBD, which may mean a type of CBD is it).

Thanks if you shed any light.

kinda answered your Q there mate, CBD is what causes these effects, and there all typical effects of Indica's.

Look into Sativa's like you said, they have a higher THC to CBD content and dont leave you burnt out hours after smoking.

I find these effects you mentioned are also to do with how well the buds were flushed prior to harvest.

I'll add this is just the classic effects of being high.

I smoked some Sativa that i grew myself the other week, and was more forgetfull then what I would be on the Indica grown hydro around here.

I have the same thing, mostly with the sinuses swelling up. Some weed makes my sinuses clear out, but some block them right up after smoking. If they swell up I get a feeling of general malaise, just feeling shitty and tired with a low grade headache. It feels exactly like you describe, a dirty high. It started happening around last year or so, before I never had too much troubles even with swag. What seems to help me is using some nasal spray or a neti pot to soothe my sinuses, and then taking a nice hot shower or bath.

Isn't this just a typical indica high ?

I get it all the time haha

Yeah I would get that when I smoked Indicas. It's not a bad feeling but I know some people who hate the indica high.

arthunter888 if you vaporize and do it properly you get only THC and avoid the effects of CBD and CBN and you don't get as much couchlock.

IME vapor does not bother my allergies nearly as much as smoke does.

As for your question take some pseudoephedrine or an allergy pill before smoking. Using saline nasal spray also helps. Taking a hot shower does too like ovlov wrote.

Yes usually typical indicas do this, but come to think of it I forgot to mention that even Sativa's that don't look too 'healthy' (were not grown/harvested by a skilled grower) have this effect.

I guess whether the grower allows the THC to degrade before picking plays a role. I also wonder if non-cannabinoid chemicals may play a role, such as chemicals you feed the soil with, and whether or not you flushed those out before harvest.

Has anyone who hates this effect had any luck with non-drowsy antihistamines such as loratadine or cetrizine?
