Dihydrocodeine and citalopram

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience using dihydrocodeine (DHC) while on citalopram?

The general consensus seems to be that DHC is not a pro-drug and so is active on its own, meaning that its activity in vivo should not be affected by the enzyme inhibiting properties of citalopram.

However, I have little if any opiate tolerance and I cant seem to get much off this drug. I have 30 mg tablets. Yesterday I took 2 orally, waited an hour and then snorted 4 over an hour period, waited a couple hours then took 3 orally and I got little if any (placebo?) effect. I am on 30 mg citalopram a day.

Anyone any ideas?

A lot of people find the euphoria associated with dihydrocodeine to be along the lines of, or less than that of codeine. You probably would have been better off taking something to potentiate the dihydrocodeine and simply eating the 4 pills rather than snorting them. Dihydrocodeine, like codeine, is an opioid that varies greatly from person to person - you either love it or hate it.

There shouldn't be any negative side-effects between the dihydrocodeine and citalopram other than the normal CNS depressant issues that come with opioid use.

30mg of citalopram is a relatively low dose, so you could probably bare skipping two or three days and experimenting with dihydrocodeine again to see if that makes a difference for you.
 
I was prescribed 240mg (8 tablets) of dihydrocodeine daily for several years and also took citalopram daily for one of those years.

To address citolpram firstly...... I really hated the side effects which become apparent after the first 3 - 4 weeks: no sex drive whatsoever and just a general zombie-like blunting of my emotions. I will say that it successfully calms out-of-control depressive feelings but the pay-off is not really feeling any positive emotions either. TBH I'd not recommend citalopram to anyone but would instead suggest mirtazapine - which has the added benefits of promoting sleep (take it an hour before bed) and promoting appetite in general.

As for dihydrocodeine..... I always got great euphoria from eating (crush them and parachute or bomb them in a rizla or piece of tissue paper for maximum rush) anything from 4 to 8 of them at once. And don't snort them either as there are simply so many binders and crap that this isn't an effective manner of getting the active ingredient into your system.

But beware of tolerance........ for the last year or so of my dihydrocodeine useage I'd frequently take anything between 10 and 20 pills (600mg - which is edging into the lethal dose range ) at once. And STILL be fiending for more after 4 -6 hours!

These days I'm on 75mg methadone (ostensibly in three 25mg doseages daily) a day instead and MUCH happier.

Personally I love dihydrocodeine and the speedy rush that it gives when taking 4 or more at once but they are phenomenally addictive (don't be fooled into thinking that because they're closer to codeine than morphine then they can't be that addictive or dangerous........ I'd place them as being AT LEAST twice as strong as codeine, if not three times as strong) and should be approached with eyes wide open so to speak.

I've experimented (been prescribed) the 30mg tabs, the 60mg tabs and the 90mg tabs and any combo of these you could possibly think of so if you have any further dihydrocodeine questions I'd be happy to help.

Citalopram completely merks the enzyme responsible for breaking down Codeine (learned this the hard way :( ) but I'm unsure about Dihydro.
If you got no effect of that much then I'd hazard a guess that it is the same...
 
I discovered yesterday that I can get DHC syrup with no other active ingredients and only sucrose used as a sweetener OTC. There's probably less sugar in the bottle than a bottle of coke/pepsi has.

DHC is quite a strong analgesic, 30mg of DHC = 10mg morphine according to the DF118 bottle pamphlet. I'm sure that's somewhat accurate when it comes to comparing analgesia but as far as euphorias concerned, morphine is much stronger IMO.
 
Just got back from Cambodia where I acquired a massive herion habit and as most know, #4 there is as pure as itr gets. The point?

Dihydrocoeine (only Dicodin, 12 hour ERs, aka Dicodin LP, 60 mg, tabs are available OTC averaging 10 US a box.

I am aware of alot of OST research taking place concerning the substance, which is also know by the Smith Kline apellation "DF118."

DFs ARE related closely to codeine but is much stronger. Also, it has no ceiling like the 600 mg ceiling one finds with codeine . Like codeine though, it is converted into morphine upon metabolisation.

Certain substances inhibit this conversion, others like Promethazine potentiate it to a good degree. Cital is one of these that inhibit.

Alot of the OST studies claim high rate of success,with the ERs finding best results, although some naturally compromise the matrix by biting them and/or crushing them whie ingesting.

As for a 3:1 ratio with morphine , meaning 1 morphine of equigesic power, is 3 times as efficent as the DF, it is actually closer to 10:1, so be careful. Alot of times conversions are haphhazard.

I've been on citalopram for about 6 months, and while codeine doesn't work for me at all while on it (other than negative side effects), dhc works good :)
 
Before you close..!

I'm very experienced in DHC, it's nothing like codeine (seriously) lasts much longer and is more effective for pain management and (for me) less side effects.

I have also taken the 2 together, the citalopram ffor PND and I ended up swithing to fluoxetine (prozac) because I felt they weren't effective.

This however is only my opinion...and it could have been in my head..I was in a very bad place at the time and have always shrugged off SSRIs as a doctors excuse to shut you up and get you out of his office. (the hand them out like smarties here)
