Free verse is like throwing all your hats into the center of the floor. A poetic format is like a nice hat rack where you can hang each line and organize your thoughts. Our minds are organized in a 'fill in the blanks' kind of way. Much like a computer looking for just the right five letter word, our brain likes having a structure to play around on. from http://hubpages.com/hub/poetic_formats

I was searching for some new formats to write my poems in and I came across this site

http://www.perfectlydarien.com/poets/

I think it's all bullshit other then the following points the guy makes:
*must look at website to understand the following*

Use proper capitalization
Use proper capitalization part 2
Control your line breaks

I'm posting this because those three things that I agree on, are actually very important when it comes to writing (especially poetry since that's what the site is about).

The rest of the nonsense this person talks about kind of urks me. For example 'Don't write angsty poems' and 'Don't exaggerate yourself' are the two that really piss me off. People who write angsty poems don't write bad poems, in fact they usually explain their pain/suffering very well and it usually helps the writer to open up. I know I have plenty of 'angsty' poems and they all mean a lot to me since they chronicle my life. The exaggerating yourself part, wow really pisses me off. Example to counter his, I am going to college taking out loans to pay etc, Bill Gates has billions of dollars, however his problems differ from mine, and would most likely be worse than let's say umm his situation with cash. Ya know? Next though I agree on how he says using all caps is stupid, well at least in his own words he says that. Anyhow, write however you wish, but all caps for shared poems is just annoying and pointless.. agreed? And lastly, controlling line breaks is very important, we all know that. No one likes run-ons, and no one likes see something like...

"See
Spot
Run."

It's just unattractive and doesn't get to the point, and obviously detail is lacking very much so.

Sorry for babbling on and on, just felt like making this thread since there's always new writers joining BL and a lot of people make some of these common mistakes. Happy writings!

Oh and here's a great website I just found, it has tons of formats of writing, explains them, and shows examples. Very good for beginners and even those of us who know how to write already.

-add/edit: Feel free to post websites you have links to that pertain to writing formats; would like to see others and read them personally as I'm sure others would too.
