Different Antihistamines - Are they safe to Mix?

This is probably a question that has been answered many times in the past with regards to potentiation but there are a few specific questions id like to ask which im yet to find definitive answers for even afer searching. (No doubt somebody will have a link to the answers)

I know the 1st Generation antihistamines are generally regarded as better for potentiating Opiates (2nd, 3rd Generation not so much) I usually use Diphenhydramine 50mg or sometimes Promethazine 25-50mg, although i find they both add to the sedation nicely, on occassion they sedate me a little too much and end up knocking me out!

Another thing is they dont really do a great deal to stop the itching!

So i bought a 2nd Generation Antihistamine called Cetirizine which comes in 10mg tabs, i understand this will not sedate me as much as the other 1st Generation Antihistamines.

Is it safe to take the Cetirizine alongside Diphenhydranine or Promethazine? Without suffering too many nasty side effects....

All I can tell you is that in my own experiences I frequently take diphenhydramine or dimenhydrate with Hydroxyzine when I take my pain medications. I am not familiar with cetirizine but based on what I said you should be ok if you have some experience taking both substances in the past.

Start small, no need to overdo it. And don't mix any other CNS depressants!

I have experience with Diphenhydramine and Promethazine when taken on there own to help with with sleep.

I also have experience of using the Diphenhydramine with Opiates (Mainly Oxycontin, Poppy Pod Tea - High Doses of each Opiate)

I always use High doses of Benzos when using Oxy + Antihistamine (The reason i tell you this is to give you some sort of an idea of my regretful tolerance, seeing as you said " start small, don't mix with other CNS depressants!"

Btw im not scoffing at you, what you have said is perfectly good Harm Reduction advice. %)

I just wanted to know if the Cetirizine will help with the itchiness?

Luckily enough i dont suffer too bad with Nausea and other unwanted side effects.

I think i will take that with a pinch of salt, to be fair my Benzo/Opiate drug interaction is of bigger concern.

I just wanted a good 'Anti itch' antihistamine! I know they all do that job to a certain degree just some obviously work better on the itch than other, just as some work better for sedation than others etc..

Living with intense allergies, I too am interested.
Sometimes on a bad day, I'll take a psuedoephendrine(sudafed), antihistamine (2nd generation) and a nose squirt of memetasone furoate (nasonex).
My doctor has never advised me to mix antihistamines, not sure if it's bad or not, never tried it either.

It should be fine, i've done it plenty of times. Some people get sleepy on cetirizine, but if you've used it before and got no depressant effects, you don't really need to worry. Just be careful of how much DPH/Promethazine you're using, as they're the ones with much worse anticholinergic effects.

Yeah the site always airs on the side of caution, as you would expect, I always take "Moderate Risk" to mean don't go overboard and do shed loads of both together, but its a handy site for a quick check there are some odd interactions I've found that I wouldn't have thought about not being in any way medically trained.

If it's any help..
I have terrible allergies (food, meds & enviroment) and between the cat, dog, neighbors mowin and something I ate/smoked my lips swelled last night and burned! I took 50 mgs DPH and 100 mgs hydroxyzine. I fell asleep pretty easy but was up for 4-5 hrs before layin down.
I guess it has to do with tolerance. I've been usin these allergy meds for upteen years.
Start small and don't mix anything til you know how it'll effect you.

Tbh i doubt that any f the 3 anti histamines thst i was initially abutnk nn

dipenhy and promethazine are both CNS depressants, so your breathing could be more shallow but nothing serious unless you were taking high dosages. stick to the benefitial value and i see no harm in taking them together, you just might be a little more groggy and tired if you take them before sleep in the morning, or during the day.

as opiates are cns depressants too be careful if you use both of the 1st gens together, a 2nd and 1st shouldnt cause any problems though.
