I don't know how to describe it and neither do my friends so I'm asking here. One thing I will say is that I can tell Hip Hop when I hear it and same with Rap. I feel that Rap is more 'rhyme on the beat', etc where Hip Hop is 'rhyme as you please as long as u know that at end it will be a sick song'.

What is the difference between Rap & Hip Hop?

A friend described it in terms of Beats Per Second (BPS) but I would like to know the real difference in simple and real terms!

What are some popular examples of Rap and what are some popular examples of Hip Hop?

I really like Psycho Realm, Sick Symphonies, ODB, Wu-Tang Clan, KRS-ONE, Sick Jacken...so far these are my favorites. Thats not to say im not familiar with the other more commercial and newer rappers.

hip hop was originally a term used to describe the rap/graffiti/dance culture spawning in the late 70's and early 80's. kool herc and his block parties got the ball rolling and the three converged to create the hip hop culture. so technically rap IS hip hop, but hip hop isn't necessarily rap.

but for the record, i use the two terms separately as well. it's really more about how you perceive it than anything. to me there's just more raw ability and talent in 'hip hop' than in rap. the writing's more solid, the production's more solid, and the overall attitude is just different. again though, that's just how i differentiate the two styles. i think most music junkies (and specifically hip hop junkies) have their own criteria to sub-categorize everything within the genre.

rap is a subset of hip hop. i.e. something can be hip hop but not rap, but not the other way around. so rap would encompass everything that is, well rap, but hip hop would include rap and then things like R.Kelly or whatever

I consider Rap toa be more "real" type of music. For example Rap is Tucac/Biggie/Wutang. I consider Hip-hop to be a mix of RandB and rap that has a catchy chorus. For example Hip-hop is Kanye west/ Mims/etc. I like both though.

'rap' is nothing more than a descriptor of an MC's vocal flow. Therefore hip-hop, grime, beat poetry, even some dancehall stuff is 'rap' music or like dance or pop songs with rappers, but hip-hop music is solely a sort of music native to America created usually through the use of sampling and synthesizers with having Jamaican soundsystem roots, with MC's rapping over a beat. Anyone who says they listen to 'rap' music is probably a troglodyte or a poser. Please don't listen to anyone else in this thread, read your history books kids.

I know that Hip Hop has the 4 main elements in it but that is as a lifestyle. I'm talking about how a normal person can distinguish between Hip Hop and Rap.

Btw, I'm not very familiar with these newer rappers like Kanye West who was mentioned.

I agree with kultron.

I use hip hop to describe music.
I use rap to describe rapping.

Hip hop is the beats. Rap is what one does over the beats.

come on people...at least get the quote right

"rap is something you do,
hiphop is something you live"

I think rap is more of the poppy stereotypical hoes, pimpin shit, maybe more west coast aswell? Hip hop is more conscious lyrics and prouctions (dusty jazz samples like Da Beatminerz beats etc). Hip hop is also more of a culture, lifestyle, (b-boying graffiti etc) as opposed to just being about the music. Krs one was a big part of cementing the idea of the difference between rap and hip hop culture I think.
