Thought itd be a good idea for a thread for those weird and wonderful facts. There's probably a thread for this somewhere else, doesnt hurt having another does it ;)

When glass breaks, the cracks move faster than 3,000 miles per hour. To photograph the event, a camera must shoot at a millionth of a second!

We need more threads like this

" sonoluminescence "

using sound and water this can be achieved:

Temperatures of above 20,000 K have been measured at the centres of these tiny bubbles. This is hot enough to boil diamond.

There are more species of wasps that will die once it stings you than there are bee..

Did you know in the 80s construction began on the 'Superconducting Super Collider' (particle accelerator) in Texas, which would have had a tunnel 84km long & required 99 trillion volts to operate. However, the build was scrapped by Congress after $2 billion dollars had been spent on digging a 22km stretch of tunnel.

In the words of Bill Bryson:
Texas now boasts the most expensive hole in the universe

Best one I stumbled upon of late relates to air conditioning. Apparently America en masse spends 15% of it's electricity bill on air conditioning each year. Which is the same amount Africa as a continent spends on all forms of energy for an entire year. The conclusion from this is simple. Either Americans need to become sweatier or be eliminated from existence.

You can capture the movement of light itself at a trillion frames per second <3

^ Isn't that cheating a bit? Ie.. They actually used lots of different pulses of light and compiled them into one shot?

Or am I thinking of something else (might be the apple one)

Age renders you less certain of whether a badger or a baboon would win in a fight.

Until this week, the last bearded Conservative Cabinet minister was the 4th Earl of Onslow, president of the board of agriculture until March 1905.

When given a date far in the future, William Hague can tell you off the top of his head which day of the week it will be.
