Did people get high in biblical times?

I wasn't sure where to place this. I believe that the desire to get high is just a part of human curiosity and has existed since the beginning of time (yes - I believe the Bible chronicles the beginning of time, or at least the beginning of humanity - let's not debate that because you won't change my mind and I won't try to change yours ;)). I have found very little research to support this idea though. I'm thinking they probably had weed at least? Anybody know anything about this (with sources/citations)?

According to your definition of the beginning of time, people have certainly been intoxicated before the beginning of time.

they very well might have had some substances. not sure how much science/chemistry knowledge they had back then though, or what they knew of drugs. if they had the knowledge to make alcohol though, they very well might have had some ganja around or experimented with different stuff.

even though Jesus turned the water into wine, the Bible never says that he drank of it himself. Everything in moderation..

i too am a firm believer that the Bible is true though. the Bible is one of the craziest books (crazy in a good way) ever written. there's so much violence and war, and it really does cover everything one needs to know. After all the Bible does say there is a time for peace, and there is a time for war.

Yes. You'd have to be tripping hard to talk to a spontaneously-combusting burning bush.

^^

ya i wouldnt trust any source that says Jesus was a stoner. that's pretty blasphemous, and there is no way in hell that source is even close to being reliable.

Apparently he used some sort of cannabinoid oil to anoint people with. Not sure where I heard that, could be BS

that splitting rivers quip reminded me of a program i watched on discovery channel the science behind the 10 plagues. pretty interesting shit. anyways they talked about this down force phenomena and how wind going the right speed and at the right angle can part water. the nile valley or red sea or w/e it is had perfect conditions for this to happen a land bridge submerged under the water making it possible. it was pretty neat to watch. im agnostic if it means anything lol

Cultures have been using drugs long before biblical times. Marijuana, psilocybin, dmt, and others were being used before monotheistic religion was even a concept.

The Bible is not a reputable source either, men do not split rivers, or walk on water.

things were different before Jesus died on the cross man. the old testament was a scary and dangerous place. people had to sacrifice lambs in order to have their sins forgiven, and sins were a lot more punishable.

God's work was more "physical" you could say. I do believe that Moses did part the sea with the help of God.

When Jesus died on the cross, things were changed. instead of sacrificing lambs, you can now pray to God/Jesus (they are the same, yet separate) and have your sins forgiven. It's about faith now, and you gotta have some in order to be a believer.

There's so much proof for the existence of God. The world itself is proof of his existence. There is no way that some big bang created everything, or that microorganisms arose from a "soup" that was charged by electricity from lightning. the human body is way too complex to have formed by randomization.

just look at the mechanism of blood clotting. it is so complex and precise, that there is no way in hell that it could have formed by itself.

even take a look at how atoms and molecules interact. this world was built for a purpose man.

I'm not defending the big bang, but just think about how complex an intelligent creator would be. "there is no way in hell that could have formed by itself" ...or at least it is a lot less likely than blood clotting.

but that is not what this thread is about. i have not read anything about it, but common sense would say if the had figured fermentation out they had probably figured out tinctures and other ways of using plants to get "high."

Yeah, could be, but I'm really interested in research and discussion about it from all angles. And thank you for responding - I feel like you and I are on the same page for the most part. Some people have deduced things about my beliefs that just aren't so...and you can always sense the condescending "tone" in responses. :\ Oh well...such things happen when you put these kinds of posts out there.

Frankly, I really believe drug use has been around since "the beginning of humanity", which I personally think was covered in Genesis.
