Did I mess up my heart?

Hello, im 18 and my mom told me she was going to take me to the doctors the day of the appointment. I had taken about 20mg of xanax the night before and I was very tired and high still so I snorted an adderall to try and sober myself up. At the doctor, the nurses found my heart was beating irregularly. After an ekg I was prescribed bystolic for my heart because something was off, so my question is did I really damage my heart doing many many drugs or did they prescribe the bystolic because I was high and uppers + downers mess with your heart

Did you tell the doctors you were using drugs? If you didn't, you should have done.

While you can get pretty erratic BPMs by mixing drugs, it shouldn't cause clinically irregular heartbeat. Otherwise, i'd recommend checking with a doctor. Heart problems are serious enough that it's not worth the petty hiding of your drug use from them.

I wouldn't assume you did any permanent damage, but I question your judgement when you take 20mg of xanax the night before a doctor's appointment, and then try to "fix it" by snorting adderall before going to the doctor ? I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but seriously, you need to step back and think about what you are doing.

You don't fix the effects of a downer with an upper, they dont work like that.

You should inform your doctor of what you had consumed which could have caused some kind of effect on the test.

20mg of xanax? how did you even wake up for the appt? and like the above posters, dont mix downers and uppers but....i think it was the adderall that made your heart race, it damn sure wasnt the xanax, 20mg...i just cant get over that man...do you have a super high tolerance to catch a buzz to have to eat that much? I been taking them for over 10 years and the most I ate was probably 10mg, maybe a lil bit more but never 20mg. be careful man please.

wow how did you take 20 mg of xanax and not blackout..how much is that in Valium? like 200 mg or something

Wow man. My heartbeat flies all over the place when I take either of those drugs, let alone together. It's perfectly normal in my eyes and very acute in time, only as long as your high

Im pretty sure you don't need the medication if you were checked up tweaked on adderall..

Bottom line in my opinion, this is a question for your Dr and you need to be honest with your Dr on what drugs your doing. All he is doing in prescribing the meds based on the results of his tests, and probably do not know the full scope of what you were taking. By him adding another medication to the ix because he may think you have a heart condition may ctually cause you much more harm then good. While I hate to be crass here, but we are not doctors here nor can we give medical advise. Your playing with large amounts of opposite medications and by your Dr now prescribing you a medication that may not be needed as the irregular heart rate was likely cause by your mix of stims and downers, now add into that a medication to treat a medical condition once the drugs are out of your system could wind you up in a hospital with a new problem brought on by not giving your doctor your full run down, in fact on a more serious side and not to scare you but be 100% truthful could kill you if you really don't need this extra med in the first place. I would consult your DR or Pharmacist before taking the medication he prescribed and tell them exactly what you did the night and the day before your appointment. It could literally become a life saver.

Yes some may say that I am out to scare people with my responses too questions like this, but this is after all a harm reduction site, not a rehab, drug clinic, not in anyway a medical clinic. So my personal opinion is to be completely honest with your DR, he may even tell you that regardless it is safe to take the meds, but do you really want to play Russian roulette with your life?

Be safe.

Some drugs can cause an irregular heartbeat in susceptible people (atrial fibrillation) including alcohol and stimulants. Most young people with this have paroxysmal atrial fibrillation - that is, it comes and goes, and isn't dangerous itself, unless it causes your heart to race too fast, which can make you feel dizzy, even faint, as it affects your blood pressure. It may well be that you never have another episode, or that yours is triggered by drugs - I would certainly go back to the doctor, ideally explain about last time but at least get them to check your heart rhythm again. The medication you were prescribed doesn't affect the heart rhythm itself, it generally slows the heart rate down and lowers the blood pressure. It may well be that you don't actually need to be on it long term, so I think it is definitely worth going back to see your doctor.

Downers and uppers aren't specifically dangerous together as others have said except one can mask the other, and make it easy to overdo it leading to complications or overdose when one wears off..

Well.. I once OD'd on on that stim, and my heart had irregual beats and palpitation etc.
Heart was all over the place for a long time, I had panic attacks for 2 months after that.

I excersize almost daily, heart is still in a good range when resting and excersizing.
I thought I did serious damage, but I'm all good as far as can tell, never went to a doc though.

Weed gives me panic attacks now though, I hate it :(
Haven't done stims since, those fuckers.

Crucial question: How much Adderall did you take? If you took a heap-ton, I would guess, but AM NOT SURE, it would be because of that. Mixing uppers and downers in all honesty isn't that bad (depends on which uppers and downers), so long as you don't OD on one when the other wears off (sometimes happens in cocaine/heroin speedballs). Anyhow, I would be on the safe side by getting another EKG without amphetamines or the like, and see what the results are. Perhaps your heart is healthy off amps, but can't handle them, or perhaps your heart does need care either way. The Xanax didn't do it, I can almost assure you of that, even though that is a ton of Xanax. Do you have tolerance? (I hope.) That doesn't sound particularly responsible.

This. And if you thought that taking 20mg Xanax would be a good idea, then, man, I can't even imagine how much Adderall you must have taken. Yikes...
