Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm asking this as a genuinly medical thing by the way.... I'm not trying to get high off Diclofenac!!!!

I have been prescribed it twice a day in 75mg pills as I had an operation yesterday. Now I have used many anti inflamatories over the years and vary with how I get on with them.

The main two that I have taken are Ibruprofen and Naproxen. I struggle with Ibruprofen as it rips my stomach apart, well it feels like it does, and I end up in a lot of pain with it even if I eat well. I don't get this with Naproxen and can get away with only eating light bites when taking it.

So how does people experiences with Diclofenac compare to other anti inflamatories? Also, how effective is it in reducing inflamation compared to the two named above? I have some Naproxen to hand if that works best?

There's not a huge amount of info on the efficacy of different NSAIDs but as far as I am aware diclofenac is generally thought of as a step up from ibuprofen and naproxen. They will all affect your stomach - not sure why ibuprofen is the worst for you, but they all inhibit the production of the protective lining of your stomach, leading to gastritis and ulcers. If you've had a problem with one NSAID, you shouldn't really take another without gastro-protection (eg omeprazole). Make sure you always take them with food too. It's also really important to stay hydrated as they can also affect your kidneys especially if you are dehydrated.

This is something you need to ask your doctor about really, instead of a recreational drug HR site, but we've had antidepressant threads stay open so I'll leave this one open for a bit too - but I'd advise you to talk this over with a doctor, and get something to protect your stomach :)
 
Sorry, yes I should have mentioned that I was also told to take Omeprazole daily too and given a prescription.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask Effie, if it needs deleting that's fine, I was just wondering what people knew about the drug and thought what better place that BL!

I've tried to do a little research but the information available seems limited to say the least. There are plenty of websites telling me what could happen, as in bad stomach etc but it says that for each of the available NSAID's, where I was looking for a comparison of them and the liklihood of things happening. I suppose I was just looking for personal experiences of people who have used it. If I had have had loads of people say that it wrecks their stomach I'd have just gone for the Naproxen but as it stands I'll just follow what the doctor has said and report back in case anyone has the same question in the future. :)
 
No no you're fine, just making you aware that getting medical advice on here doesn't equal getting medical advice in person from a doctor :)

I'll see if I can dig out any papers about efficacy later if I have time.. glad you're on omeprazole :)
 
Aaah yeh I get you. I'm quite HR minded in that way (like my PM to you earlier about the sleep aid post ;) ). The doctor didn't really give me any conclusive answer when I asked about tomach irritation. The only thing that he said was that with the Omeprazole and only taking it when I have food in my stomach I should be OK but everyone is different so he couldn't 100% guarantee any particular outcome.

I don't ind being the guinipig this once.... to be fair it's quite a good one to be the guinipig on if I have to do it once. It's not like I'm taking 750 mg of the latest legal high that nobody has checked yet! Worst thing that will happen to me if this doesn't go well is that I'll have a bit of a stomach ache!!

Thinking about it, it may look like a stupid, perhaps over the top question to ask. But I'm in pain anyway from the operation and if I can avoid any more, even if very minimal discomfort, then it's worth asking I think! :)

EDIT: Thought I should add that I have taken my allocated dose of Diclofenac (2 x 75mg pills) for today and my stomach, so far, feels fine! :D

Diclofenac is generally a "rougher" anti-inflammatory, it's a hell of a lot more effective than aspirin though. I think it's the most effective, milligram for milligram, but it also has the highest incidence of side effects.

With NSAID's, it's really personal preference. Some people prefer high dose ibuprofen, some like naproxen, some are best off on diclofenac.

I have used it in the past as I have bad knees (partly an old sport injury but mainly rave induced damage!) I cant take this stuff at all at the moment having had a recent internal bleed.

But I have a friend at work that uses it all the time due to his knees being totally fekered due to sports injury (I think he's had at least 4 operations) and he swears by the stuff over anything else, all a bit anecdotal but though I'd throw it in :D

It really does look like it's a case of what works for one may or may not work for another. It's interesting that you say you can't take Naproxen TheLostBoys because I much prefer that to Ibuprofen and find it a lot easier on my stomach!

I still have a couple of days left of this diclofenac so will keep reporting how it feels with regard to my gut. As for the swelling it's hard for me to judge because I don't know how much I would or wouldn't be swelling up without it but yes there is a little swelling there that doesn't seem to be getting any bigger. Unfortunatly, I can't comment on how it relieves pain either as I am self medicating pain relief!

Only thing I can comment on is how easy it is on my stomach so I will keep reporting that! It is still OK so far!
 
I've had Voltaren (diclofenac) before and it didn't do a whole lot for my back pain. I was recently prescribed meloxicam and it seems to be working well. It all depends on the person, and alot of NSAIDs can affect your body in different ways. Mostly in ways with GI issues. I cant take Naproxen/Ibuprofen due to it makes me bleed easy and this is the first I have found that works without every single little bump leaving huge bruises. Just be careful and if you have problems with it internally but it helps with your inflammation, they do make diclofenac patches called Flector Patches which I have a few of thanks to my doctor and free samples and they work "ok" and they are really expensive. I hope this helps.
 
I've taken diclofenac sodium (Voltaren) before...it gave me diarrhea. I found it to have much better anti-inflammatory properties than Ibuprofen, Naproxen, or Piroxicam. But it appears to be less effective than Ketoprofen. As for it's analgesic capabilities...it's as good if not better than all of the other NSAIDs I previously listed, but by no means is it an opioid, more on par with a few extra strength Tylenol. These are my opinions based on my experiences, your mileage may vary :-)
 
I personally use the gel. It's amazing for my back, knee's and legs... I'm not a huge fan of the pills.. I use ibuprofen, Naproxen fucks me all up. I ate too much in high school and I am paying for it now. I don't find a "comparison" to either... They're hard to compare. Everyone is different. What Ibuprofen does for me Voltaren might do for me. Wish I could be of more help.

The gel is really worth looking into, depending on what hurts...

Thanks guys, I was only on a course of them for a few days and took my last one today. The swelling has gone down loads in my belly area where the incisions were made and tools put in through. My groin is still a little swollen but not too bad.

Thanks for all your input guys. I have found it to be a good anti inflammatory and has given me no bad stomach at all.

Glad you got the help you were looking for. :) I would have tried the gel on my belly if I was rxed the pills..... Just tried it out...

i was prescribed diclofenac for a sports related knee injury
i found it to be very effective, in reducing both inflamation and pain
at first it upset my stomach but this soon settled after a few days

in my opinion it is far more effective than ibuprofen, i was on it for 2months and only side effect was mild stomach discomfort on days 1-3
 
Thanks guys. Yes, it was only a short course of it for me.

I am on my way to recovery too. I'm back walking around and can manage stairs now so a few more days I shall be back to normal. It's more restricting than painful at the moment and the doctors said it would be painful for up to 3 weeks so I think I'm healing prity fast! :D
