Diazepam Question

Is Valium just weaker Xanax or does diazepam have effects that differ from Xanax? Stupid question probably but .....

They are both benzodiazepines but diazepam and alrpazolam have different effects. While they are both anxiolytic and sedating, valium is also used as an anticolvulsant and muscle relaxant. Xanax can be used for these (and is sometimes used as a muscle relaxant) but valium is much better for these indications.

it has effects different from xanax. and I wouldn't refer to it as weaker (I guess if you meant mg to mg, yes) but a good dose of valium can be just as if not more pleasing than xanax if you ask me. xanax has too much amnesia with it and makes me do weird things.

you'll notice the muscles relaxing quite a bit from a good dose of diazepam. its scripted for back spasms and stuff. not so much for anxiety anynore, although my oncologist scripted me the 2mg ones for anxiety.

well xanax and valium are under benzo's not opiates. and, all benzos in a way have the same effect, but also diffrent..xanax is ment to help panic attacks or prevent them, ment to take them daily..but they also kick in very quick so if oyur having a panic attack you pop a xanax and everythings fine. if you tried to do that with any other benzo..ud be ridin out that panic attack solo cuz valium is long lasting...

i gues kinda like adderall IR and XR, valiums the extended release and xanax is the IR. im not sure how k-pin is supposed to work but god damn it helps my anxiety so good i get nearly fearless of anything.

i find the valium high lasts longer, but it also makes me very sleepy, more of a muscle relaxent feeling too. xanax gets me more fucked up, but i do like to remember my experiences because with xanax...the next day alwayse seems to be a blurr. but k-pins make me feel drunk as fuck and also a very very good painkiller

This.

Also, dose for dose, diazepam is a lot less potent than alprazolam (Xanax).

xanax is about 10x more potent than Valium mg for mg, but effects are different IMHO. both are great for anxiety, but xanax is overhwhelming sometimes because of rapid onset which can lead to problems (check out people on xanax on youtube...not pretty) i prefer valium honestly, it has a pretty quick come on as well, but nowhere near as donkey punched feeling as xanax. maximum effect id say take them on empty stomach. and no matter what happens, DO NOT DRIVE...trust me, its a very bad idea. and respect the benzos...id say once weekly tops, or else youll find yourself in one hell of an addiction. and unlike opiates, benzos arent out and out "euphoric" for most people, so the addiction just sucks all around.

benzos do nearly the same thing. often, their varying efficacy seems to be related to market forces just as much as research

valium is similar to xanax. it lasts ~6h rather than ~2h, it takes 1-4 hours to peak rather than 15-45m. xanax is useful for sparing use for panic attacks, if you want to avoid physical dependency. valium is useful if you need benzodiazepine coverage 24/7 since it's unsustainable in many ways to keep popping xanax and peaking up/down like that popping xanax is bad for tolerance (though taking one diazepam per day will be worse for tolerance than one alprazolam per day)

Obviously there are some differences in the effects of Xanax & Valium, since they're different chemicals. But, for the most part, I'd say it's safe to say that they're more or less used for the same things & have the same effects.
&, I don't know how many other people who reply to this will or won't agree with me [& I don't really care, for that matter], but I'd say it's also safe to say that overall, yes, Valium is weaker than Xanax. Of course, when you talk about one drug being weaker than another, there are many ways that could be interpreted. & I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if SOME people experienced stronger effects from Valium than they did from Xanax, & I wouldn't be surprised if there were at least one or two very specific & small ways in which Valium was more effective than Xanax. That aside, though, I'd say Xanax is stronger than Valium. In mg per mg potency of course [.5 mg of Xanax is roughly as potent as 10mg of Valium], but the main reason I'd say Xanax has significantly stronger effects than Valium is because Valium almost always comes in dosages of 5mgs or 10mgs. Xanax comes in dosages of 1mg pills most of the time... It also comes in .5mg pill dosages & 2mg pill dosages [2mg Xanax pills = "Xanax Bars"], but it seems like without question more people get 2mg Xanax pills than .5mg Xanax pills.
... However, 5mg Valiums are equal to .25mg of Xanax, & 10mg Valiums equal .5mg of Xanax. But the common starter dose of Xanax is .5mg [or sometimes 1mg], & the common starter dose of Valium is 5mg. The common recommended dose in general of Valium is 10mg & the common recommended dose in general of Xanax is 1mg.
So, incase you haven't caught on, that kind of means that the way both of those medications are prescribed & such makes it so people on Xanax are generally experiencing more or less twice as strong an effect as people on Valium are.

Over here xanax only comes in 0.25mg and 0.5mg pills.;. and a usual starting dose of xanax is 0.25mg maybe 2 or 3 times throughout the day or "as needed"... however what i do agree with you is that its dumb to say its ok to Rx 5mg xanax, but more than 60mg diazepam is too much... at least thats what my doc thinks

Xanax has the knock down power while valium has a more relaxing effect... I just replaced my xanax for valium... I don't regret it. Xanax I find it excellent for knocking a panic attack dead in its tracks while valium will keep your anxiety at bay but it doesn't (atleast for me) have the knock down power for a panic attack. I woudn't say Xanax is "stronger".. I would say the medications work differently.

nice answer
xanax definitely not an anti convulsant

I have a script for 60 10mg valium a month and 601mg klonopins a month and I just went off of 60 1mg xanax a month...

Why does it make you ill? I had one of the worst cases of panic disorder my psychiatrist has ever seen. My psychiatrist is a specialist in panic disorder and has written a book on the subject... He is not just some script happy quack. I don't know where I would be If I hadn't found him as a dr. Luckily he has the balls to script me the medication necessary to treat my problems. I will also be on them for the rest of my life. Not something I am happy about, it is what it is.

Then my pain management is a different story.

I get 150 Roxicodone a month
fentanyl patches.
And topamax to prevent migraines.

They have essentially the same core effects (Xanax's minor antidepressant effect notwithstanding), but in different ratios. Xanax has been "tweaked" so that its anxiolytic effects are more pronounced; Valium is a more all-rounder with decent muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, hypnotic and amnesic properties.

Xanax is a lot more potent and is better for, say, panic attacks, but worse for muscle relaxation and insomnia. It is also much shorter-acting and a hell of a lot more addictive.

I've been prescribed both. In recreational doses I would have to say that I prefer Diazepam. Alprazolam has great anti-panic effects, making it a great anxiolytic for a short period of time. It only lasts roughly 3 hours while Diazepam lasts about 4 hours. They both are rather short acting, although Valium has a very long half-life. In my opinion Alprazolam is a LITTLE better anxolytic. However Diazepam is an incredible muscle relaxant and can be a nice hypnotic. The great anti-convulsant effects prevent any sort of unwanted movement, you can just kick back and "chill" the entire duration. I like muscle relaxants which is probably why I enjoy Diazepam over Alprazolam
