Diazepam and Oral Morphine

I am a newbie, I am a long time user of solp max (12.5 codiene each tab) of which I takes 8 spread throughout the day.

I just lost my mum 2 weeks ago.

I has been given diazepam 5mg tabs but has no codeine in the house. Only 20mg Morphine tabs.

Do you think it would be ok for me to take 10mg diazepam and 20mg morphine tab tonight at the same time?

We don't use SWIM here, we know its you and it doesn't do anything to protect you.

In regards to your question, you take 100mg of codeine a day, you should be okay taking a 20mg morphine tablet (morphine is pretty crappy orally).

What your experience with diazepam? Do you have a tolerance?

Please don't use swim, it doens't protect you and everyone knows you mean you.. would you mind editing your post? Thank you :)

In general you should be careful mixing opiates and benzos as it can be dangerous, and it depends on your tolerance, but that isn't a big dose of either drug so you should be okay unless you are particularly benzo or opioid-sensitive. If in doubt, maybe take 5mg diazepam with the 20mg morphine - you can always take the other 5mg later..

I am so sorry to hear about your mum :( <3

If you would like some help and support, check out The Dark Side forum - it deals with all sorts of emotional problems, including bereavement - there is a grief/bereavement thread (found in the directory or on the front page of the forum) too or you are welcome to make your own thread if you like.

sry about that. Yeah I have beeen taking 10mg a night for the last 2 weeks to get a sleep.

Many thanks, Yeah I thought it should be ok but just wanted some reassurance that I wasn't going to crazy with it.

If you are used to 10mg diazepam then it should be okay, 20mg oral morphine is not a big dose. We can never promise of course and definitely don't add in another downer, but your doses are pretty low :)

If you ever want to check opioid or benzo doses there are conversion charts at the top of our forum (above the "current research" box) :)

No problem, I will check that out. Its nice that the web has sites like this, that educates people and allows them to make an educated decision for themselves. :)

Really glad you are finding BL helpful :)

Oh, and welcome to BDD!

Thats a lot of Dazepam at once, I would test the waters first by only taking 5mg w/ your 20mb morph tab, enjoy!

^This. Just for future ref to explain why the combination is dangerous, opiates and benzodiazepines taken together have a synergistic effect, the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. The benzo can greatly increase respiratory depression, and push what would be a borderline dose of morphine over the edge into OD territory. The combination is commonly responsible for overdose resulting in death. A lower than normal dose of the benzos would generally be advisable if you're taking opiates with them.

The bioavailabilty of morphine orally varies a bit, and so does the metabolization of codeine between, so I can't say what is equal to what for you, but generally morphine is roughly 6 x more potent orally than codeine. 20 mg morphine doesn't seem like it would be too much, but you don't take much codeine at all, so I'd start with just half a tablet of morphine, 10 mg. I don't know if you have tolerance to benzos, but if not, I'd just start with the morphine without the diazepam. You are used to opiates, and are dependent apparently, so I don't see real risk in taking oral morphine for some stress. If the morphine works well at 10 mg, great. If you want to be a little more sedated maybe add 5 mg diazepam to that for your next dose. If the morphine just doesn't cover it at 10 mg, try 15 mg. If that feels right, but you still want some added sedation, again I'd add maybe 5 mg diazepam. If you have to go up to 20 mg, fine, you can take 5 mg diazepam with that to. But, without a benzo tolerance, I wouldn't add much more than 5 mg diazepam, 10 mg tops probably. I'd start experimenting with the morphine before whipping together opiate-benzo cocktails. You know opiates well, even though you don't take much, so you will know what amount of morphine is right. When you find that dose, stick with it, and as I said add a smidge of diazepam if needed.

Also, if you do end up using the diazepam more, take it before the morphine, so that the diazepam doesn't bring you down at all from the morphine. Just go slow, and get to a cushy spot. Also, a warning benzos are extremely addictive, and benzo wd can be potentially fatal if you come off of them after having taken them for a while. Most addicts who have gone through both opiate and benzo wd agree that benzo wd is by far worse. I am very sorry for your loss, I hope the opiates and benzos help you. They can truly work wonders. Again, beware of benzo addiction, and jacking up your opiate tolerance too much and creating a much larger habit.
