Hi,

Got a question in relations to these two stimulants for the treatment of ADD. I understand that both increase dopamine levels, but that their actions are different in terms of how they achieve this.

Would it be correct to say that Dexamphetamine blocks the re uptake of the neurotransmitter while Ritalin increases production?

Lastly why would Dexamphetamines work better than Ritalin in some patients? Can anyone give examples of adverse effects, or reasons for Ritalin being less effective than Dexamphetamines.

Cheers

Alex

ritalin orks in similar ways to cocaine
and dex... is an amphetamine
ritalin most people don't enjoy but dex on the other hand.
I will try to get back to you ith some answers.

yeah I also read that's Ritalins action is similar to cocaine

My main question is in terms of Ritalin's use in ADD treatment whether some people would get negative results (and what these would be??) that people might not get from Dex. ie. that sorts of reasons that Dex would be better, or more effective for Add treatment.

Cheers

Alex

dex is smoother and a lot better for add.
i have adhd.
ritalin comdown bad and makes me have a negative mood. it depresses me and irritates. yuk!

I believe it is methylphenidate which acts primarily as a reuptake inhibitor for dopamine. Amphetamine stimulates dopamine release, and I THINK also has some reuptake inhibiting effect.

Interesting that you say that Tadfish. Why? Well from personal experience I have found that Cocaine has had the same effects on me as what you describe from Ritalin. And the two have the same action....interesting...

Anyone else got any further comments on why this maybe the case?

Anyone comment on why Dex could be better than Rit??

^^^^^^
can you expand on that? Just because the things you mentioned regarding the effects of Ritalin on you are very similar to the effects of Cocaine on me!

I'd specifically like to know if anyone has had positive (ie. productive/useful) results with dex that they have not had with Ritalin and why?

Specifically I'm interested in theories why? Or reactions etc...so positive or negatives result's and hypothesis for either Rit or Dex are welcome.

Cheers

Alex

Well everyone has different brain chemistry, so different drugs work better for different people.

And people forget about short term verses long term:

Short term Ritalin was more stimulating for me than dex amphetamine,

But in the long term, i find dex amphetamine more stimuating than ritalin

If you are too hyper then Ritalin is best in the long term.

If you not hyper then dex is better.

just my 2c

Would it be correct to say that Dexamphetamine blocks the re uptake of the neurotransmitter while Ritalin increases production?
Absolutely not.

Amphetamines reverse action of monoamine transporters, while methylphenidate is an uptake inhibitor

Cheers. That's what I read in a very well regarded book on ADD. Certainly all the more reason for me to hit the books! Thanks for that neuropyschopharmacology website, its very good. Will be a bit of a labour to get through, but I'm following it so far.
