Every day agents at Detroit Metro Airport randomly pick passengers and inspect them and their luggage.

When Steven Thao was pulled from the line, no one expected the 55-year-old chicken farmer to be smuggling heroin.

Thao was on a jet that took off in Vietnam. The flight stopped over in Narita, Japan and eventually landed at Metro Airport in Romulus. Thao is a chicken farmer with 11 children. He is not the kind of guy who gets the attention of drug enforcement officials working at the airport. However, agents do random checks and they chose Thao for inspection. In his luggage, agents found prescription bottles with about 500 pills. As they looked closer, Thao fidgeted. He became nervous. Those pills had 400 grams of heroin in them. That's enough heroin to get charged as a heroin dealer and face 20 years in prison.

"He had a larger amount than a typical user would have," said Sanford Shulman, Thao's attorney.

Shulman said it looked bad for Thao and his family. Real bad.

"When you go to federal court, and you're in a situation where there is this kind of quantity of drugs, someone's going to prison," Shulman said.

The attorney said he soon learned that things were not exactly as they appeared. Thao was shot in the foot during the Vietnam War. While recently visiting relatives in Vietnam, he discovered they used heroin pills for the pain. The pills worked.

"Heroin is chemically similar to morphine which is a very common pain reliever in the U.S.," said medical expert Dr. Frank McGeorge. "The difference is heroin has a very high addictive potential and, hence, it is illegal in America."

Dr. McGeorge said that while heroin is illegal in the U.S., it is still a very effective pain killer.
"Heroin is a good pain medicine and is used in other countries," he said.

Shulman was on a mission to keep Thao out of prison and with his family on the chicken farm. He arranged a lie detector test with a professional polygrapher. Thao passed the test. When he was asked if the pills were only for himself and only for pain, he passed.

"You don't want to just put it into an equation and come out with an answer without giving some thought to it, because there is a human side to it, too," Shulman said.

However, the law is the law. Bringing heroin into the country is illegal and when it is $50,000 worth of the drug, prison time is almost a certainty.

"It was just that he was in possession of narcotics and these pills contain heroin, which obviously made it a serious offense," the attorney said.

Shulman convinced Thao to throw himself at the mercy of the court and plead guilty in hopes that the judge, Avern Cohen, would return him to the farm instead of sending him to prison.

Letters were written to judge Cohen from most of Thao's 11 children. They told Cohen that their father is a good man, a hard worker and someone who is needed on the farm, and more importantly with the family -- with his children and grandchildren.

When Thao went before the judge for sentencing, the judge gave him a huge break. Citing the lie detector test and his family's service during the war, he ruled probation and no prison time. The ruling reduced Thao to tears.

"We have a person with a family and a reason to look beyond strictly guidelines and numbers and prison," Shulman said.

Thao may have been given probation but he still must report monthly to the court to prove he is off heroin. If even one random test comes back positive, Thao can be hauled back to court and sentenced to the full 20 years in prison.

Now this makes me happy! I live in MI and man can I tell you LE goes balls to the wall hardcore after heroin, dealers, users etc. The cops were probably extremely pissed off that this guy isn't going to rot away for 20+ years behinds their private prison system.

In the words of Charlie Sheen, this guy at least is duuh WIIIINING=D

more like it would cost less to just deport him back to Vietnam

^regardless, the man found a pain medication that worked for him(heroin) one of the most effective painkillers out there and he got caught with 400 grams worth and did not get sentenced to prison. Now who knows what would happen if I got caught with that much smack but who cares, this is what more judges have to start doing, weighing the what and the why etc. Not just say "oh well you got caught with some drugs, you'e going to prison"

This guy got the break of a life time..............now he has to stay clean & gotta figure out what pain medication he can take that wont screw up his probation.

Has anyone swallowed heroin in pill form? Im sure you still get blitzed out of your mind on a pill like that.

That judge is awesome. Good stuff. We obviously need more judges like that. Judging it like it is - not like how Newt Gingrich would want: death row for the chicken farmer.

I love how Dr. Frank McGeorge thinks that the difference between Heroin and Morphine is that Heroin is highly addictive. Since when is Morphine not addictive?

My thoughts exactly lol. In America we do things right and always the best so even the thought that heroin is a real painkiller in other parts of the world is a hard concept for LEOs and the courts to understand. At least there is hope though as this is the first time I've seen a case like this.

I used to parachute my dope all the time. It works great, you just need like 5 times as much. Probably why he had 400 grams worth.
How is that more than personal use? 500mg/day oral is less than a 3 month supply. And herion oral is about the same strength as morphine oral.

Was gonna comment on that fucking comment too. What kind of 'medical expert' thinks the difference between heroin and morphine is that heroin is way more addictive? Fucking dumbass.

That judge made a good call though, pretty rare that they actually think these things through.

At 500 mg/day, 400 grams is slightly more than a 26 month supply.

Was it pills with 400 grams of heroin in them or 400 grams of pills containing heroin? In most states the law makes no distinction between 100% pure and a substance with any detectable amount like .1%. Due to this you get people who get long sentences for weak cut up drugs, even bong water, brownies, or sugar cubes of LSD.

Sometimes in Asia heroin/morphine pills pop up from time to time.

Glad to see this guy got a fair shake, most wouldn't, I wonder how pricey his lawyer was.

Definite props to the judge for actually using his brain in determining the sentence to hand down.

It really was a pretty fucking stupid risk he took though, and quite irresponsible given he is a father. As I understand things it isn't super hard to get on pain management in the states, certainly easier than where I live. Heroin might work best for him but of the selection of narcotics available for pain in the US I am quite sure he could of found something equally effective. Something tells me there might be a bit more to this story than Mr Thao bringing back 400 grams of heroin for pain relief, still glad he got off light though.
